David Bowie was born David Robert Jones, and initially went by the name Davy Jones, but, realizing there would be confusion between himself and Davy Jones of The Monkees fame, he decided to change his stage moniker to David Bowie, named after James Bowie and the Bowie knife he invented. Bowie's discography is massive and incredibly varied as he would reinvent himself constantly, all the way up until his death really, so it's difficult to really categorize him in any one way. He was a part of so called 'glam rock' in the early '70s, but even in that time period he had quite a few different identities from album to album. In the '90s, he became involved darker, more industrial influenced music, and performed with groups like Nine Inch Nails. His final album before his death, Blackstar, is a wildly original, sort of jazz influenced creation that sounds nothing like anything he had done previous to it. Today's song is the opening track from his 1977 album Low, and the first of 3 albums in what is called his 'Berlin Period', where he collaborated with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti, in addition to living with and working with Iggy Pop. In this period, Bowie was experimenting with entirely new sounds and ideas, synthesizers, and Eno's production techniques to create something that was completely new.
__________ ##
[Listen to *Speed of Life* by **David Bowie** here...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkyp6HCqrs4)
__________

###
David Bowie, Low (1977, RCA Records)

## Enjoy today's song!
