I first discovered <b>Minor Threat</b> in 8th grade. A friend brought a mix CD with a song on it, which I liked, though I wasn't immediately hooked. A few weeks later, I had some extra cash I'd saved and bought their <i>Complete Discography</i> on CD, at which point I was hooked. I had never heard anything like them. They were fast, intense, but also surprisingly catchy in their own way. And while they were a hardcore band, their songs (particularly from the <i>Out of Step</i> period) were really complex, and encouraged me to really push myself on guitar to try and start learning them. The band was formed in 1980 in Washington, D.C. by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson. Together, they brought on Lyle Preslar and Brian Baker to round out the initial 4-piece line-up. In 1982, Steve Hansgen joined the band; he took up the bass which allowed Baker to move to playing 2nd guitar. This is the period where their songwriting really took off as they created much more complex and interesting arrangements. Today's song is actually from the earlier, 4-piece period, specifically their second 1981 EP release titled <i>In My Eyes</i>, and is a cover of a track by <b>The Monkees</b>. I've always loved the production on this song; the filtering on the whole track, then everything but the drums, before the song really kicks in, sounds great. There is quite a bit of delay on the vocals, which was unusual for hardcore bands at the time, and MacKaye's signature style definitely gives the song an energy the original didn't have.</div>
