0.000 HBDA Brief Cigar Review - La Barba Red

La Barba Cigars was founded in 2010 “after many different ideas, cigars and a few too many bourbons” as the story on their website goes.

The La Barba is new to me, I've been craving to try one ever since I have seen, frequently, my friends posting about them online. I have had this stick in my humidor for just a couple of weeks. I was looking in my humidor wondering what I should smoke and review,
I amusingly chose the La Barba simply because today I got a haircut, so tonight I celebrate the accomplishment of my barber, with the La Barba.
;-P

Wrapper: Honduran Corojo
Binder: Honduran
Filler: Honduran Corojo, Nicaraguan Habano, Nicaraguan Pele de oro.
Vitola: 5 3/4 x 46
Price: $9

Over the wrapper, the pre-light aroma is a common scent of barnyard, with sweet tobacco and raisin at the foot. A cold draw provides the same sweet tobacco and raisin, with oak, plus a little spiciness on my lips.

The La Barba wears an attractive dark brown and oily wrapper which is very smooth to the touch, and has minimal veins. The cigar as a whole feels densely packed. La Barba Red's band is neither new age, classic, or overly artistic, but it is pleasing to the eye and works well with the wrapper.

I am pairing it with Sailor Jerry rum, garnished with a couple maraschino cherries.

After toasting, lighting, and being distracted with smoke ring practice, the La Barba Red's first flavor that jumps out to me is cedar, followed by hints of cocoa, graham cracker, and oak. The draw is perfectly open even with the dense feel, and just a small punch style cut.

Underneath the main flavor notes is a more subtle almond and espresso. Also a bit of spice - black pepper, but it is quite faint. The Barba Red's smoke is very thick, heavy, and cloudy. The finish lingers heavy and long, I tend to prefer a shorter crisp and clean finish.

The La Barba went out on me only after sitting just 2-3 minutes in the ash-tray, but I have been puffing at a slow rate this fine evening. When I knocked the ash off for a re-light, I noticed the filler was burned slightly farther than the wrapper (concaved). This seems to happen when I puff a cigar too slow, a thicker wrapper is usually an accomplice.

I notice a few changes around the La Barba's second half, the almond is more pronounced, as is the cedar undertone. I also notice a mocha note added to the mix, but graham cracker have all but gone. The pepper and oak trends to more of a cinnamon nuance. All in all, the La Barba is not super complex, but it has provided some changes to keep it from complacency.

Final Thoughts:

The cigar actually went out on me two more times before I was done, and again I didn't leave it very long. This leads me to believe it is a construction or storage issue, but this isn't as crummy as a tight draw would have been.

The La Barba Red is a respectable stick that produces a darker flavor profile that will connect with many smokers. I think it lacks some delicateness, it is more meaty, heavy, and leathery vs. silky, light, balanced and rich. It's all preference... Many would prefer this over, for example, a Padron which has the latter qualities. The cigar performs well in the smoke output department and the retro-hale is smooth and easy. That being said, I am not going to seek out a 5-pack anytime soon, however, I would smoke the La Barba Red again, and I would love to try their Purple band.

Smoke time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Price opinion: slightly high
Recommend? Sure

My overall grade: B
(A+ to F-)

I appreciate your views, upvotes, follows, and resteems.
Feel free to comment and tell me what you want to see, and not see in reviews, or other cigar articles.
-Greg
