After some weeks of travel I can finally start sharing some impressions, some Light Paintings, and Long exposures that I made along the way. Hope you did not miss me all that much. If so show me some love for this post. After Thailand, I spent some time in Japan. Time was limited and I had to attend a conference, so I chose to go to Tokyo and Kyoto. Today we start right in the heart of Tokyo. Visiting Japan is always exciting for me. I love the culture, the interesting traditions, and the fascinating history. Today I share a Camera Rotation with a Zoom of the Tokyo Station as the featured Image.

 ## What happened here?

What you see here is a single exposure Camera Rotation with a 180° twist and extra zoom effect during the second part of the rotation. The exposure time was 22 seconds while the camera was set to ISO 400 and my Canon 16-35mm F2.8 les was set to 18mm at F4.5. This was my 9th attempt and below you see the first. To get there I varied a little the approach and tested how much time I would need on each side. The only difficulty for the shot was to cover half of the lens during each cycle. For that, I used my hat as a simple lens cover.

Here you see my camera rig alignment was not really good and doing a full rotation was way too busy. so I decided to do that only on the bottom half for the featured shot.

 ## The Location - Plain Long Exposure

When you read about Tokyo Station you quickly find a few interesting facts. The building was originally opened in 1914 and has since become an iconic symbol of Tokyo's history and development. Not as famous as the Sydney Opera but hey. The station's distinctive red-brick Marunouchi Building is a designated Important Cultural Property and reflects the architecture of the early 20th century. It does not scream Japanese to me but that's in the eye of the beholder. To me, it looks like the Western European influence was strong with this one. The Station is strategically located in the Marunouchi business district, making it the main transportation hub connecting various train lines, including the Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) that I later used to get to Kyoto.

 ## My simple Set Up

As you see I tried to align the camera and tripod perfectly in front of the building. The better the alignment the better the rotation will fit in the center. Since I don't have a lot of patience and since the temperature was still more than 30°C I did not spend much time serving my OCD.

Passt scho!

 ## Location Scouting Walk around the area of Tokyo Station and the Emperors Garden

A few years back I did a photograph here at this little park. You also see that result in the video about Tokyo below.

 Same Spot during the day

The contrast of Modern and Historic.

Der Kontrast der Moderne und Historischem.

 https://youtu.be/hWehU9En9RU

If you to see more of Tokyo and Light Painting you may find my the following video impressions interesting.

## Camera Rotation what? Camera Rotation is just what you think. During the exposure, the camera is turned in a few angles and while doing so I also light up the scene. Everything is one exposure without any trickery.

## Kamera Rotation Light Painting? Kamera Rotation ist genau was Ihr jetzt denkt.

https://gunnarheilmann.com/wp-content/uploads/Camera-Rotation-LightPainting-Gunnar-Heilmann_banner01.jpg

Not too long ago I wrote up an article on the topic. It has been published on my website and here on Hive as a blog post if you are interested in this technique.
