Fallout 2 #10: Citizenship.
Welcome to another episode of Fallout 2! The series where I tell you what happens in the game and use screenshots to illustrate these happenings better!

Before this episode can truly being, let me explain what the last episode was about:

>In order to find more about Vault 13, the party asks Lynette, The First Citizen of Vault City to give them access to the city's main computer. Lynette asks protagonist-girl to kill all of the people of Gecko, a city whose entire populace is made out of ghouls (people whose skins fell off due to radiation) in exchange for citizenship, which will allow her to enter the Vault.
She wants Sara to do this because the power plant inside Gecko is slowly infecting the people in Vault City.

>Harold, leader of Gecko, explains that his current problem is *also* the power plant, that is currently leaking dangerous radiation soup, which is affecting the people of Vault City.
Harold knows it's only a matter of time before Vault City comes knocking on their door.

>Gordon, a ghoul in Gecko, has a plan: to make both Gecko and Vault City acknowledge the fact that they need each other to survive.

---

Eventually, the group succeeds and <strike>protagonist-girl</strike> Sara manages to make them both work together. To achieve this Sara goes works with the Senior Council Member McClure, because Lynette hates all which is not human and would not give Citizenship if Sara helped the Ghouls. After solving this problem, McClure give's Sara her "Citizenship" which allows her to access to Vault City's Vault with no problems.

Sara's real goal is finding out about Vault 13, the place where her ancestor's come from. Inside of Vault 13 there's a G.E.C.K, which is <strike>this game's McGuffin</strike> a device that allows the people of the post-apocalyptic world to revitalize the land, thus allowing her people to bring life to their dead fields.

Once Sara obtains her citizenship the people of Vault City treat her completely different.
---

Picking up right where I left in the last episode, Sara and company head towards the Vault with the intention of looking up anything related to Vault 13.

![1.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/Dwy6AOHz-1.png)
One of the perks of being a citizen is that you're allowed to enter the City's Vault. Legally that is.

Normally, the player can also bypass this entire process of "looking for a way to become a citizen" by just sneaking into the Vault (There's a trick that lets you just walk right into it).

Which is kinda counterproductive, since doing that will make them miss on a lot of experience points...

![2.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/BrXDiuHY-2.png)
The entrance and main floor of Vault 8.

Anyway, no matter how you made your way in all you really need to do now is to head to the lowest floor and access the main computer.

There are three characters inside the Vault. Two of them are on this floor and one of them offers a quest which gives a lot of money!

The first NPC is Phyllis, who the player can talk to in order to get some... "interesting" information about the city.

![4.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/7b3FO7l3-4.png)
If the main character is male they can date Phyllis in the sidequest: "See Phyllis". Female characters can flirt, with no success.
![5.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/imqZFFhv-5.png)

Phyllis's little quest (which is unmarked by the way, this means it doesn't appear on your list of quests) can end with her leaving the City, talking to the Doctor about the city's fertility and/or the main character promising themselves to never date anyone like Phyllis again. It all depends on the main character's skills at the moment.

The other NPC here is the Dr. Troy, who actually gives you a quest that is marked.

![7.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/58vcvhlA-7.png)

The doctor's request is simple, he wants some drugs.

![8.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/phosUTXs-8.png)

His goals aren't nefarious at all, turns out the guy just wants to make a cure for the thing, after all it's a very addictive drug in the wastes which is ruining people's lives even more than usual.

You can choose to blackmail him instead, which doesn't change too much aside from the fact that, if you ever ask him to heal you, he'll kill you instead, by dealing 6999 points of damage.

Sara agrees to the Doctor's terms (A thousand bucks for a sample of Jet) and before leaving she asks for the floor in which the main computer is located.

![6.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/gnC9RYLC-6.png)

Instead of going into the third floor you can head towards the second floor, where they store everything. Although you won't be able to take anything until you have a decent strength and a crowbar to pry open those doors.

![9.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/Wio1nEOn-9.png)
Here's the main computer

There's three things that the player can do with this computer, see if Vault 8 has a GECK, see if it has info about Vault 13, and system update.

Asking about the GECK gives you this information:

![10.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/oCIGJKCQ-10.png)

There's also a little tidbit of information that tells you that every vault had at least 2 GECKs, but that Vault 8's second GECK wasn't sent and instead they got an unlimited supply of water chips.

This is a reference to the first Fallout game, whose entire story revolves around the player finding a replacement water chip for Vault 13.

If you ask the computer about Vault 13 it tells you this:

![11.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/4q6cw0Fc-11.png)

Sara then puts the location of Vault 15 in her Pip-Boy in the hopes that it will actually lead the party closer to Vault 13, because God knows so far every lead just takes us to a different place in the wasteland.

With that out of the way the party goes back to Gecko to finish their mission, before they can get there however...

![15.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/XiVYo0pW-15.png)

A random encounter happens and the party finds itself between two groups of people shooting each other.

This type of thing happens normally on the wastes but depending on who is it that's fighting you can take the advantage here.

Right now, it's a bunch of Guards vs Slavers/Highwaymen which means that (as long as the party doesn't do anything that angers the nice Guards) they can loot the corpses of whoever dies in this fight.

Which lets me find, among other things...

![16.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/nvOcCRV1-16.png)

The Jet our Doctor needed and some weapons which can be sold for money, talk about lucky...

![17.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/90CMVoW4-17.png)
One thousand bucks! We're rich now baby!

Normally, the guards at the entrance of Vault City check the player for any drugs or alcohol which would make smuggling Jet "difficult", but since Sara's a citizen now she can skip this and smuggle whatever she wants into the city.

Back to Gecko, the party talks to Festus...

![12.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/4GocDGOA-12.png)

All that needs to be done now is to put the data disk into the plant's main computer.

![13.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/Wz8CvlxE-13.png)
Simply equip the disk and choose to "use it" on the computer.

Festus approves.

![14.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/lEg161HD-14.png)

Sara decides to sell all of her newly "acquired" guns to the local arms dealer. (Remember kids: __It's not stealing if the owner is dead__)

Let's see how much I can get by selling one of these...

![18.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/XUOEWKHn-18.png)

__4750$ Bucks!?__

# WE'RE RICH BABY!

...

Is what I would say if we could actually get that much money...

The way the system works in this game is that you __won't__ simply get all of the money that appears on screen. Usually, when bartering with NPCs you want to give them stuff (either goods or cash) whose total value equals or exceeds the value of what you want the NPC to give you.

It's best to use items like guns or ammo, or even stimpaks, when paying an NPC since money is best saved for either quests that ask you to pay for something or for cases when you *really* need something from a vendor.

Anyway, before leaving Gecko Sara speaks with Harold who thanks her for all of her hard work and then tells her a little of her ancestor, <strike>the guy from the first game</strike> the Vault Dweller.

![19.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/9n6WK5LQ-19.png)
![20.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/Zmfxrp93-20.png)
![21.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/focpZMTr-21.png)

Harold then gives the party 3 Super Stimpaks, like the name implies these are the stronger brothers of the normal stimpaks. While they do heal a lot more than their regular counterparts they also damage the user some time after use, so keep that in mind.

With that done, there's only one thing left to do.

Through some sidequests the player can obtain a "Super Tool Kit" and giving said kit to a certain person can give the player the greatest item in the game.

First, you have to talk to Val in Vault City, who just happens to be Vic's daughter. __We don't speak about Vic.__

The player can help her to get some tools and after giving them to her she tells them to return after one or two days, doing so gives us this little interaction:

![23.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/BgMOKnIl-23.png)

![24.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/FW0DhP3E-24.png)

This is the first step, the next one needs the party to go back to Gecko.

![25.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/UjVRknz8-25.png)

There, you'll find a Ghoul who will trade you a car piece for the repair kit. (I did this before selling most of the weapons the party got)

![26.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/JlMi3f3q-26.png)

Finally, with this car piece in their possession all the party has to do is go back to The Den.

If, by some miracle, you have read all episodes then you would remember The Den as the very unpleasant place Sara was in for the first couple of episodes, before reaching Vault City of course.

It just so happens that our "prize" is in this location.

![27.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/ZHU6HCGZ-27.png)
__Vroom Vroom.__

All that you need to do now is talk to the guy working on the car, which is called a Highwayman, who will sell it to you for 2000$ and install the piece which is needed to make this work.

I cannot stress how important it is that the player gets this vehicle. It will forever change the way the player travels the wastes.

![28.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/UZYqFuBn-28.png)
We have become *speed.*

The Highwayman can fit all of Sara's companions, no matter their size or the number of them. It also comes with a trunk you can put most of your stuff in, even Power Armor.

Like anything else in this world, the Highwayman is powered by energy cells/microfusion cells, these are what you use for ammo when using energy weapons, but for the moment we'll use them as fuel.

![29.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/guubadoop/Wle2CAAG-29.png)
I have a sudden, almost furious need to make a quick pun about the "Fast and Furious" movies now...

With this thing in our possession, *the world has truly become our Oyster...*

---

If you've gotten this far, thank you for reading!

I'll end this episode here, as obtaining the Highwayman allows the party to reach the corners of the world map rather quickly.

I'm not sure what the next episode will be about... There's a lot of stuff that can be done now that we have an easy method of transport.

Oh well, I'll find out what to do later.

Again, thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day!
