 Banner created in chatGPT

When you think that we reached a top level on science, we surpass that. Not long ago, I was listening to a podcast with a researcher discussing synthetic life. I already have many people talking here on Hive about genetically modified organisms, gene editing, mRNA vaccines and more. But for sure, in the near future, I will see more of you complaining about this research area. Usually, people are used to talking about organisms that we modify, but in this case, we are creating new living beings from scratch. Why?

We are reaching a point on science that we can do anything we want, including create life.[Free-for-use in FreePik]

The podcast was interesting, especially for those like me who remember studying about the theories of how life started on our planet. Probably, those also remember the RNA theory. This theory says that the first organisms in our planet had RNA as a storage of genetic code and DNA would appear a bit later. That's because RNA has its functional role as an enzyme, so it can store genetic material and also perform metabolic functions, while DNA is basically just a storage of genetic material. So this researcher was creating organoids from RNA molecules artificially made, with AI help.

One of the interesting findings of this research is that they could produce a membrane for the organoids using this RNA and establish other features. Basically, they created this organism very prehistoric, so if it existed long ago, for sure it doesn't exist anymore. After finishing listening to that, I was thinking about it. How crazy that is, something that for sure isn't found in nature nowadays, what are the consequences of that if it escapes the laboratory? But it doesn't stop like that.

Last month, an article brought the use of AI models to generate whole DNA genomes of potential bacteriophages (viruses that use bacteria to reproduce and, as a consequence, kill). The genomes generated don't exist naturally, so they inserted the new genome into bacteria E.coli is resistant to antibiotics, those that cause problems for us. These artificial genomes could generate viable viruses that reproduce and kill the bacteria with more efficiency compared to the regular bacteriophage. That brings us the whole potential of this technology. But brings more fears for sure.

We can generate artificial sequences that can generates a life organism that doesn't exist. [Free-for-use in FreePik]

Despite being excited with all these results since it is cool to see that a theory about the origin of life is being proved in the lab, and also we have this potential new option to fight antimicrobial resistance, I start to feel some fear that we are playing God too much. It is a huge responsibility, and if we do not use it well, we can cause adverse results that will influence the premature extinction of our species or even the entire living beings that exist in our planet. Many Sci-fi movies explored that already, maybe that's why I started to think about that, and how what we do can be dangerous.

 Banner created in canva

[Uso gratuito no FreePik]

[Uso gratuito no FreePik]

 Banner criado no Canva
