*"Why am I stuck governing over this tiny creature?" Jelly thought, nesting his strawberry flavoured self on the the softness of his bread bed. His owner has gotten brought this...Pudding as a playmate. Companionship, Jelly's owner had rationalized to the less than amused cat. Now as Jelly lays there in the pleasant afternoon sun, Pudding pawing his tiny nubs for attention from the older cat, he wonders how fast he can flush Pudding down the toilet.*

And that was the story behind the illustration~! I'm quite happy with how this turned out and working on this made me miss our family cat while I'm still here in university. I think the sour-sweet flavour of strawberries fits him quite.

Anyways, before I delve into the process of this illustration, I'd like to briefly express my appreciation for the very positive and supportive feedback I received on the [first part](https://steemit.com/steem-cartoon/@hanbun/steem-cartoon-jelly-cats-process-pt-1-and-lighting-wood) of this illustration's process. I am absolutely floored by the awesomeness that is the Steemian community, particularly the #steem-cartoon and #teammalaysia community (you guys rock~!).

*EDIT 9/12/2017: Some changes were made based on the feedback I received from @orenisme about colouring the lineart and so I did as I promised in the section, which is the image you're getting now. I'll be showing a side by side comparison of the two at the end of the post. Onward! *

And so, I share the process of finalizing this illustration. In this portion, I tackle colouring a texture that has some transparency (in this case, coloured glass and clear jelly).

References played a key role my approach towards this part of the illustration. I specifically looked at references of *round* jelly as the shape I plan to colour in is very organic. So I started mapping out my cell shadows in a stark colour and changed the layer mode to Multiply and played with the opacity of the shadows (this is my go-to method of doing shadows and is repeated constantly throughout this process). One thing I did different this time is softening my shadows. Jelly has this kind of smooth texture that softens shadows and reflects light harshly. It important that I get the base shadows deep enough and dark enough as soon I'll be lowering the opacity of the colour layer to make the cat more transparent.

With the opacity lowered, Jelly is already starting to vaguely look like the texture of his namesake. But now he looks pretty dull. Jelly is a witty cat on the inside so he needs to to have that dignified glow on him.

I starting building up his colour again by increasing the saturation for him. Added highlights to replicate the harsh light refraction. I particularly like the two lines above his eyes. It makes them look like eyebrows and he's just staring at us will full feline judgement. And to make his strawberry flavour clearer visually, I added a touch of an orange glow to his colouring and added a coloured shadow under him.

Pudding is a lot easier and quicker to shade since he's opaque. I used the same technique of colouring on Pudding as I did on Jelly but the key difference being that Pudding doesn't have harsh light that refracts off. This is like a key in to Pudding's character as well: sweet, soft, and approachable which slightly contrasts Jelly's more abrasive side. The real challenge was getting Pudding into the bowl.

The solution to this was pretty straight forward: colour the bowl first, create a copy of the coloured bowl on top of pudding and overlay it. Simple, right?

Unfortunately, this muddied up Pudding's colours quite a bit. So I carefully erased parts of the copy bowl that overlaps Pudding's butt. That still left his face muddied. More erasing. Eh, still wasn't really popping. So I took from my trials before hand when colouring pudding. I initially wanted him to have a pinkish softy shadow but I ended up favouring orange more. This time, I brought the pink on his face inside the bowl. I feel this adds a kind of excited blush and really suit the character well.

Nearly finished! All that's left was to add the shadow at the bowl. I kept in mind of making sure the blue and orange are noticeable in the shadows as the bowl's glass should bounce off some of Pudding's colour in the shadows. The very last steps are some simple adjustments and flourishes to make sure everything looks good...

Signed and done~!

And this concludes the full process for Jelly Cats. The process gif this time is 2x faster than usual due to more steps being taken, so I hope you don't mind~ Thank you very much for joining me in this creation process. I hope you'd at find it at least entertaining. I couldn't add the final adjustments at the end so I hope my fellow Steemians would forgive me for that.

Till the next post!
