It Finally Happened
Well it was bound to happen at some point. After five nail-biting victories, the Bears luck finally ran out against the Green Bay Packers.

I have been lamenting all year about how hard it is to watch these insane finishes by the Chicago Bears. It seems they keep playing one score games. Until yesterday, they had won five of those. Even more importantly, they have been learning while winning those crazy games. With a rookie head coach and for-all-intents-and-purposes rookie quarterback, the Bears have done the very unique thing of winning a bunch of games while making a ton of rookie mistakes. Well now it is time to see if Yoda is right (we all know he is) and that "failure the best teacher is".

Hopefully the Bears learn from this loss in Green Bay and come back stronger for a playoff run. yesterday when the day started, the Bears were the number one seed in the NFC. Now they aren't even in first place in their division. But that is OK... as long as this loss is a learning experience that propels them forward. Winning on the road in the NFL is incredibly hard. So it is no surprise that the Bears could not win their fourth road game in a row. That feat is set aside for the elite teams in football history. Although the Bears have been incredibly fun this year, they are not a historically elite team. So a win would have been incredibly unexpected. That's why the Packers were favored in Vegas by 6 1/2 points. And sure enough the Bears lost by 7. It's almost like Vegas knows how to win money.

Even though they lost, I can't poke too many holes in the Bears game plan or game. They just flat out sucked in the first half. Their defense was great for the first quarter, the offense was terrible. Then in the second quarter, the defense was average while the offense was still terrible. They didn't even have the ball long enough to count any mistakes. They just didn't do anything.

But in the second half, the Bears offense found their mojo. They started to run the ball down the Packers' throat. By the end of the fourth quarter the elite Packers defense was gassed. But sadly, the Bears could not stop the Packers enough times to make up for the horrible first half they lost 14 to 3.

Lots of people around Chicago are complaining about the last play of the game. That should be no surprise as the Bears threw an interception on on fourth and one from inside the 20 yard line. But honestly, it wasn't the play call that was the problem. the play Ben Johnson called had two chances for success. First, QB Caleb Williams could have ran for a couple of yards and run out of bounds after gaining the first down. That play was there. But Williams chose to throw to a wide open receiver in the end zone. Normally that is a great idea. Unfortunately that Packers elite defense put so much pressure on Williams that he threw with no power off his back foot. This resulted in an under thrown lolly pop that the Packers easily intercepted. So it was a good play call that was not executed properly by a young quarter back. i can live with that.

The main reason I can live with the terrible result is that Caleb Williams has shown that he learns from his mistakes. And this was a huge mistake. Hopefully next time, Williams makes the right choice and takes the first down. It's tough o get too mad at a guy who brought the Bears back from an 11 point defect in bad weather conditions on the road.

The Bears still look like a playoff team. One way or another we will learn if this is fools gold two weeks from now when these teams square off in Chicago.
