In Africa, there is even a mountain of the same name called Atlas. And it is considered the axis holding the sky (the peak was probably not visible behind the clouds, and the then inhabitants believed that it held the sky, so that it would not fall) ***Wikipedia*** confirms the existence of a mountain called Atlas.
