Existential Questions | A 5-Minute FreeWrite
The most transcendental moment in the life of any person repeats itself every day. It is the **time to get up.**

Get up for what? Then, what?

Every day we face our particular circumstances and our role in them. How much of what happens to us is our own making? How much of what we endure could have and can still be prevented? How much can we change? If we can’t, how can we live with it?

These are not easy questions to ask, let alone to answer. Most of us do not bother. Whether we are passed our prime days or whether we are resigned to whatever cards we got, asking those questions presupposes a certain discontent or non-conformity with the circumstances surrounding us. Self-questioning our role in the world is usually mediated by external forces that imply certain aspirations.

We are taught from early age, according to our dispositions and talents, that we are meant for certain things. When that expectation has not been met and there is a sense of urgency because the clock keeps ticking, we either make drastic changes in our lives (even if that means leaving that which is supposed to be our purpose), have a mid-life crisis, panic, or enter an I-don’t-give-a-damn mode.

What happens when we do not know why we get up every morning?
Does it even matter in the great scheme of things?
What happens when we just sit in the theater without even asking what they will show?

I have the feeling that even in the extreme cases when we get too old and sick to mean anything to anyone or the world, our own decadence becomes our purpose. We stop having any agency on what we do, but our condition starts defining other people’s purposes and that may be our ultimate purpose.
