It is no secret that I have a lot of video games in my house. Not only that, I have a large variety of consoles. There's a Xbox One S, PS3, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and of course, a gaming PC. There's also a PSP, and a 2DS. There's literally hundreds of games in my house. If I include my digital collection, it's probably close to a thousand games. I have not played many of them, but I have played a lot of them. This series of posts will examine the games I've got in my house which I haven't touched - at all. As you can see, this is by far the biggest colection of backlog, for any of the modern, current gen consoles I own. Again, let's start, left to right top to bottom at my justification for owning these games...
Harvest Moon
You never thought you'd see this here, did you? Harvest Moon is actually a game that was given to us as a gift. My partner has played this title - but I haven't touched it all. A JRPG farming simulator is exactly what everyone needs in their life while they're on the go, don't they?
Astral Chain
Platinum Games does something for the Switch, set in a cyberpunk style world. I like Cyberpunky stuff - and I like my Switch, and I know Platinum Games does make good games. Therefore, I had to pay for this game to add it to my collection.
Collection of Mana
As a kid, growing up - I spend a lot of time in front of a Super Nintendo Emulator, as the single TV in the house was always taken by others, and the home computer emulated Super Nintendo games really really well. Collection of Mana brings that Secret of Mana experience into the palm of my hand, where I'll never have to worry about someone else stealing a screen from me. The only thing I'll have to worry about, is instead... all the other games vying for screen space.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Another title by Level 5 games - the creators of my favourite PSP game, J'eanne D'Arc. This is a game that I missed back when it was released in the past, so this remaster on the Switch is something that I am very keen to sit down and play with, and enjoy a thorough tale and some good story telling.
Pokemon Sword and Shield
We actually have two Nintendo Switch consoles in the house. One is used by myself, the other is used by @ursa - the plan was to each play one of the game in the new release of the Pokemon stuff, and off we'd go to collect, and catch them all. Only, I ... never upheld my side of the deal - and did not even touch the game.. in fact, I'm pretty sure one of them is stil shrink-wrapped.
Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights
All of these games are available on pretty much all other platforms, and all of these games are titles that I have played to death - but they're also games that I really respect, enjoy, and will always have a place in my heart. Therefore, supporting the efforts of developers porting these ancient masterpieces to the modern day feels appropriate, even if I'm being gouged to rebuy the sam game again and again generation after generation.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
This isn't really a backlog item as I've spent over 120 hours in game already. I've finished the campaign twice - but I haven't finished with the alternate ending - so technically, I want to play this game another two times, which means I might clock up to 200 hours in on it. Truly phenomenal value for a modern game, and one that has a decent story, and excellent gameplay mechanics.
Mutant: Year Zero: Road to Eden
This is an XCOM clone. It is about a post-apocyalptic world full of atmosphere, good comedy, and crushing difficulty. This is in my Switch at the moment, but not getting as much play time as it well deserves.
Ring Fit Adventure
A game where you body is the controller, and you go to war against a body building dragon using no more than two joycons and a yoga ring. This is a game that is fun, but ... is limited in my ability to play it because a) time, and b) - it becomes physically exhausting and necessary to have a shower after a 45 minute long play session. I'm nowhere near fit enough to sit down and have hours and hours of play with the title.
Octopath Traveller
A Squaresoft game that I haven't touched. A game that is a RPG - and lauded as a pretty damn good one at that - I just haven't been able to justify sitting down and playing the game...
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I bought this game when I bought my Switch. I sat down and played it for about an hour. It felt like a clone of Horizon Zero Dawn from the PS4, except with a Zelda skin. I know its probably much, much more than that - but even from what I've seen when friends play the game - that's all I think of it as.
Darkest Dungeon
I fucking love this game. The end, full stop. I haven't finished it though. I've played it for hours and hours and hours on the PC - but its crushing difficulty, unforgiving perma-death, and brilliant gameplay mechanics make me keep wanting to come back to it again and again and again.
Fire Emblem Warriors
I've actually finished this one, I don't know why I took a photo of it amid the other back log items.
Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Defined as baby XCOM, Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle is an absolute blast to play. Colourful, funny, and tactical, with a side of puzzles, its got plenty to keep you busy after you've finished the main story. I've done that, but haven't touched the DLC side of things. I haven't purchased the DLC, and that's a good thing!
Bayonetta 1&2
I got the dual pack of Bayonetta on the Switch - it was good to see a mature game ported to the Switch, and that's why I purchased it. I haven't really touched it at all though - again, it's Platinum games, and its a title that I've wanted to sit down and play since the original release on the PS3/ Xbox 360. And that concludes another episode of backlog shame!
