A lot of non-numismatic collector always think that the older the note or coin is , the higher the value it is.

The main factor that determine is that note or coin got any value is the rarity . Most of the note or coin that are 4 or 5 figure and above is very rare to come by .

Take this banknote for example:

This RM2 is worth RM1000 not because it is RM2 banknote, but because it is very rare to come by those RM2 start with ZB.

The most rare the note or coin is , the higher the value it will hold. Like the 1970 1 sen Bronze type where only 4 pieces is known , it is value around RM7000 .

Another factor for coin  is the title of the commemorative coin .
Take the 2000 Thomas cup silver commemorative coin for example.

It was Malaysia badminton golden period , a lot of people love it. So even if there is 20,000 pieces issue by Bank Negara Malaysia(BNM) which consider a lot  .But the value for each is still around RM1,000 above .

For banknote , another factor is serial number. In numismatic world , we call it the golden number . If you ever came across a solid 8 or solid 9 , you will hit a jackpot.
This RM100 AA9999999  was at a Bank Negara Malaysia Special Serial Number auction at 2016 .

Other number to look out are radar number (1234321) , ladder number(1234567) and low number (XX0000001~XX0000010 ) .

Other minor factor is how well you keep the note or coin . If the banknote got 1 fold , the value drop by half.  For coin , collector like those in mint condition . Make sure to keep them properly if you want to do this collection .
