Fear of the Future is What Makes Us Human
Fearing what might happen in the future is one of the things that actually make us human. Animals will fear an immediate danger that is occurring right at that moment, but humans can fear something that might happen when it is not happening right at that moment, or even rearing its ugly head at all. Some people might say that this fear is necessary as it stops us from doing stupid things. If you look deeper into these fears most of them are unfounded and unnecessary and keep us from achieving our dreams. Some of the types of fears that hold us back are:not being good enough, failure, having no money, rejection, fear of success or intimacy.... Not being good enough is actually the root of all the other fears, because if we feel we are not good enough we think we will fail, or be rejected, or that no-one will want to be intimate with us. Not being good enough stops us finding our dreams and success.
Do you feel that you are not good enough?
I have felt this all my life and every day - having this fear is natural, but letting it rule your destiny is tragic. The fear can stop you from even trying and even daring to dream big, or even small for that matter. This fear turns out to pretty baseless. I am good enough. You are good enough. I am not perfect. You are not perfect. Nobody is. You need to put yourself out there in the world. regardless of this fear, because it will always be there, regardless of what you do. Stephen King has it. Brad Pitt has it. Oprah Winfrey has it. They have this fear, they might not show it, but they do not let it hold them back.
So how do you beat this fear?
Here are 9 steps I have discovered from others and first hand about facing and eradicating that fear (and that they work)..
Step 1: Acknowledge the Fear
This is a huge achievement in itself. If you just manage this today you have done something amazing. We all have these fears, but they are pushed back into the recesses of our minds and invade our lives somewhat unnoticed, ignored and unacknowledged. They affect us everyday so please acknowledge the fear as you are only human!
Step 2: Write the Fear Down
If you physically write the fear down on a piece of paper, this is another way of acknowledging the fear. It externalises the fear and takes its power away. The act of writing it down gives you power over the fear, not vice versa. The fear is now outside of you and you can do something about it. No stomp on the piece of paper, burn it, rip it up, crumple it, or even leave it whole and put it somewhere you can see it to remind you that you have beaten that fear - choose whatever feels right for you.
Step 3: Feel the Fear
You have probably heard the saying "Feel the Fear, But Do It Anyway". Well you have acknowledged the fear, but does it still frighten you, does it still make you feel reluctant or you are embarrassed to have this fear? STOP Remember you are not alone, as we ALL have these fears that we are not good enough. Repeat after me: "There is nothing wrong with having this fear" Now feel the fear, immerse yourself in that fear, experience that fear .. It is not as bad as you think, is it? Yes its part of you, but it doesn't control you.
step 4: What is the Worst That Could Happen
When you ask yourself this question the answer is often not as bad as you think.... What would happen if you failed in a new career choice? You'd get another job and move on. What happens if that person that you really really like, doesn't like you back? Life will find you someone more suitable. What happens if you went broke trying a new venture? You'd cut down on your expenses and maybe ask family and friends to help out for a little while until you got back on your feet. Even just starting can be such an exhilarating experience. I have a fear about getting some of my thoughts and experiences in the public eye, for example no-one might read this post, but I am writing it anyway in hope that it reaches someone who needs it. And it is a stepping stone that will enable me to write about some more personal stuff in the near future. Just do it and feel good about doing it.
Step 6: Prepare Yourself for Battle
When you go to war, you prepare yourself and train yourself. In the same way we can prepare ourselves for going into battle with our fears. We can be ready for the slings and arrows that fear throws us at by having a plan that we stick to rain or shine. Next, we gather all the tools , skills and information we need to implement that plan, have a practise and then put the plan into action.
Step 7: Be in the Moment
Fear of failure and such like are fears of what the future might hold. It is all too easy to get caught up worry about ifs, buts and mights of the future. Banish all thoughts of the future and the past mistakes and failures. This moment is right now. Do something right now to banish your fears by taking a step towards your dream. Don't allow yourself to think what might happen. If you feel yourself drifting off and thinking about past or future, bring yourself back to now, this present moment. (This is mindfulness and this step in itself is a fantastic life skill to master)
Step 8: Small Steps
Don't expect to conquer Everest in a day or dive into the deepest part of the sea. Conquering fear and pursuing your dreams and life purpose can be overwhelming. The answer is to start small, one little baby step at a time - make it something you know that you can succeed at and something you can feel good about. It might be a tiny bit out of your comfort zone, but that is how we face the fear. Then we take the next step, and little by little we get to the top of Mount Everest.
Step 9: Celebrate Every Success
Remember to celebrate even the littlest success, celebrate every single thing you do that takes you in the direction of your dreams and use the feeling of victory to become who you want to be. Each success is a stepping stone to the next victory.
