These days, most people no longer trust any information they see on the social media. Most times you hear them watching a movie or reading an article and be like, all these are just contents, meaning that these things are just there for those content creators to make money. As man continue to evolve, we have found so many interesting ways to generate income from almost everything we do and that is where the social media comes in. Yes, a lot of content creators out there make these contents just to make money and be popular. They don’t really care if what they do is right or not as long as they get their views, followers and comments.

For this week’s Hivelearners topic, edition 1, we are asked to share our thoughts on the monetization of social media. Personally for me, this is a blessing but of course, as humans, we always somehow look for ways to turn blessings into curse for ourselves and even others with or without knowing it and that is to show us how selfish we can be at times. Because most people want to make money and be famous, they just go on their social media handles and share information that are not true but will get them their likes, comments and followers. 

A lot of people, despite knowing it for a fact that the content a particular content creator is sharing is not true, they still go ahead to consume that content and even go as far as making others around them like these contents just for the fun of it without knowing the adverse effects it has on us. Monetizing social media is a blessing to us but we are turning it into something else. As humans, we strive daily thanks to these interactions we have from people all over the world. Despite the fake contents, controversies and all, the social media has helped me in so many ways and it is because people know they can monetize their skills.

As consumers, we have a major role to play in all of these. Some of us just follow the crowd to support a particular content creator without personally verifying what they share and the impact of what they share. A content creator will only continue sharing controversies, fake news and all because they have people that are supporting them. If that support is not there, they will either leave the social media space to look for something better to do to make money or they will make better contents. As long as they get the support, they will keep on sharing those unhealthy contents to the whole world and whether we like it or not, they will get their views and make their money. 

Just like we have here on hive, no one can just come here to share something that is not true or original because they would have a lot of questions to answer. And even if they don’t get questioned, they might not even get any good support. The fact that Hive as a platform encourages originality, it helps us filter away so many fake and controversial contents. Most people here only make posts based on their experiences, their thoughts that are relateable and are relevant to someone else. We make entertaining contents and posts too and we are striving quite well.

On other social media platforms, this is not so because anything is acceptable. There is little or no regulation and that is why so many people can share whatever they like or even go somewhere to copy someone’s work and post it as theirs all in the name of making contents to make money. They are only concerned about themselves and not really concerned of the effect the things they share have on people. Only few persons do the right things but sadly, they most times don’t get as much as those who do they wrong thing and then they feel tempted to just join the crowd.

Creating content is legal and good. What differentiates things is when we start going the extra miles to get more. We should focus more on sharing information and contents that are not just entertaining but helpful to others, to our world. Yes, we will make money if we do it the other way but then, it’s only a matter of time before we pay dearly for it so why not just grow little by little? 

To our those who are already content creators and those who are aspiring, I want to plead with us to always consider the best of others before sharing contents. Don’t think they don’t matter, they do, we all matter. Be original in your contents and truthful as possible. Yes, you can share your thoughts, your opinions and your beliefs but it should be original, respectful and as honest as possible. Don’t be a reason why people will say monetizing the social media is the worst thing.
