Hundreds of drivers left stranded on a motorway overnight due to heavy snowfall were offered free cans of Irn Bru by a Good Samaritan.

Traffic became stationary on the M80 on Wednesday afternoon when heavy snow hit, with forecasters issuing the highest level warning for the area.

Some motorists have been in their cars for up to 13 hours in as emergency responders and local residents delivered water and snacks in blizzard conditions near Cumbernauld.

Lesley Forster has been stuck on the motorway since yesterday afternoon. She wrote on Twitter: 'Have been sitting in my car with no emergency help since 3pm'
