Parents As Prototype (5-minute Freewrite)
This morning caught me off guard with lots of meltdown from my eldest son. I gave him much comfort but it did not seem to help. He still got easily irritated and would burst into uncontrollable rage.

And so did I. Although, overall I am a person of high level of patience.

He threw tantrum at his younger brother and did not talk with a good tone.

*"You must set a good example to your little brother. Whether you like it or not, he will learn from you. You are his role model whom he admires so much. You talk properly, he will talk properly too. Manners please."* I once told my eldest son whom is 7 years old now.

Sometimes out of frustration or when big emotions befell him, he seemed to lose control and all the respect and manners were out of the window. No where to be found.

Did I tell you earlier that when my son lost it and I lost it too?

Suddenly, it dawn upon me that I was not a good example to my eldest son either. He threw his tantrum and I lost my sound mind after few rounds of being nice.

Truth to be told, I was his prototype since the beginning. What sort of prototype am I to him? Perhaps I had lost my cool sometimes and he picked it up from there - that when big emotions befell you, you could lose your cool and got into some sort of rage.

**SHAME ON ME.** I thought to myself.

I went to him and said this, *"Sorry, son. When you got mad and I became mad too. Big emotions are not easy to handle. Mummy should have known it. You are a good big brother and I am always proud of you. Shall we learn to handle big emotions together?"*

*"Sorry mummy. I didn't know what happened to me earlier,"* he replied.

We exchanged hugs and kisses. At the back of my mind, I was thinking of wanting to be a good prototype to which my sons can learn good behaviour, and how to handle self when big emotions come. A prototype of good behaviour. A prototype of pleasant manners and speech.

Parents - whether we like it or not - are the prototype to our children especially in their early learning years. After all, our brains develope way faster and earlier than them. Their tiny brains still have alot to grow.
