Did you know? In Old Havana, right in the city's historic heart, there’s a mural painting museum housed in a colonial building where you can step back in time and admire 19th-century art fragments. Interesting, right?  

But that’s not all—I’ll also show you a personal exhibition by an Italian artist, featuring the stunning canvas "The Four Corners of the Spherical World" right here in Cuba. Come along on this amazing adventure! 😉

Starting my journey at Obispo 117-119 (Mural Painting Museum), I’ll tell you that this building was constructed in the second half of the 16th century. Its architecture is deeply colonial, typical of that era.

Despite modifications over time, the house still preserves its original structure intact, which is why it’s considered Havana’s oldest surviving home, according to historians and museum experts.

This unique museum—the only one of its kind in Cuba—boasts remarkable remnants of the past: intricate checkerboard floors, partially preserved murals, and ancient sculptures.

Today, it also houses several archaeological research officesdedicated to studying and preserving these historical discoveries.

The upper floor of the house features glass display cases filled with fascinating artifacts from the colonial era. Inside, you’ll find delicate European dolls, ornate cups and pitchers with classic hand-painted designs, a rare children’s chamber pot (bacín), and decorative plates —all brought to the island by Havana’s earliest European residents.

This display case holds an array of 19th-century drinking vessels—elegant cups and ornate pitchers, likely of North American origin, though similar styles were also crafted in Europe during the same period.

This collection showcases rust-red ceramic shards—from lebrillos (washing basins) and cups to roof tiles and cooking pots—unearthed near Havana’s old quarry. Alongside them, glass medicine bottles, syringes, spoons, and worn brushes whisper stories of island life in centuries past.

Cuba’s tradition of mural painting traces back to Indigenous peoples—their parietal art (cave/carved wall art) dates to the pre-Columbian era. Today, this house preserves that legacy with exquisite colonial-era mosaics, featuring floral motifs and intricate designs that blend Taíno influences with European craftsmanship.

Visitors can explore educational displays detailing mural restoration and painting conservation techniques. All murals featured are part of the museum's permanent collection.

The center offers workshops, lectures, tours of restoration projects, and cultural activities focused on mural painting, architecture, and the city’s history.  

Many of these programs highlight Havana’s era of corsairs and pirates, with immersive experiences showcasing how life unfolded in the city—its streets, facades, and urban fabric during this dramatic period.

After finishing the first tour, I rushed off to meet Italian artist Martin Faure, who was about to debut his first solo exhibition in Havana titled 'The Four Corners of the Spherical World'.

Martin’s canvases explore a heterotopic vision of Cuban reality, where seemingly unrelated figures and objects coexist within a single staged landscape.

Perhaps through the recurring number four (symbolizing the square)—ever-present yet often invisible to the naked eye—Faure aims to metaphorize his own cosmic trinity and the unspoken yearnings of the island.

The images displayed on the gallery walls—through their content, color, texture, focus, and blur—are, ultimately, a celebratory reinvention of life as the artist experienced it during his time in Cuba.

On view are raw, intimate portrayals: a sensual Cuban beauty, vibrant nightscapes, timeless traditions, and the island’s rich cultural tapestry.

From what I can observe in his paintings, they are abstract works blending surrealist and symbolic elements within a strongly geometric framework.

This work appears to explore the relationship between body, inner landscape, and the construction of a 'specific space' blending memory, architecture, and symbolism. It might be interpreted as a mental or spiritual state rather than a physical place.

Personally, I was enthralled - nearly all attendees seemed deeply connected to this uniquely compelling art.

Each of these paintings carries profound meaning and its own distinct message, suggesting an intimate, structural exploration of a personal universe. Here, every 'corner' might represent a dimension of identity, memory, or the artist's unique perception.

A journey of eternal fortune with brief, paused stations upon the wide white walls of the Palace—now peacefully hosting this exhibition.

Perhaps here, within the four points of this space, and through the adventure of sensing what it holds, we confirm that ‘nothing is permanent except change.’

As you can see, the creator is super friendly. We exchanged thoughts about art and I learned so much about his unique perspective on the artistic world.
