A Wake-Up Call
<div class="text-justify">

Today was supposed to be perfect. I had finished all my tasks for the week and all my house chores. All I had to do was close from work early, go home, and get ready for my date with my partner.

It’s been a while since Prince had taken me out. I had told him I stopped feeling butterflies in my stomach for him, and the young man is on a mission to bring those butterflies back.

First on his list was for us to go jetskiing. I haven’t gone jetskiing before, I only saw it in movies and on TikTok. When he suggested it, I smiled, and ever since then, I have been really excited to go on this adventure with him.

The first on my list was to go for my morning run, fitness before anything, you know.

Plugging my AirPods in, I played Fido’s “Joy is coming,” and I started running.
One thing about my morning runs is that when I’m on it, nothing in the world matters to me.

I passed the shops in my street and headed to the other street. Just when I was about to cross it, it happened.

I don’t know how it happened but one minute I was trying to cross the road, and the next minute I was on the floor, groaning in pain and bleeding uncontrollably.

I screamed for help, but nobody showed up. It was 5:00 am, and not many were awake by that time.
The drunk driver who had done this had fled. He was not only drunk but he was driving in the wrong direction making it impossible for me to see him while I was trying to cross the road.

Lying on the floor, my life flashed in front of my eyes, and it felt like my brain was about to shut down. My vision blurred, and the coldness of the ground seeped into my skin.

I stayed still on the ground, hoping and praying a good Samaritan was going to find me and help me. After some time, it could have been minutes or seconds, as I lost track of time. I slowly began to feel weak. It felt like I was losing consciousness amid the feeling of hopelessness. I couldn’t help but reminisce about my life in a matter of minutes.

I smiled at how eventful my life had been. I remembered my siblings and my parents. My partner’s face flashed in my eyes. At this point, it didn’t matter if I went jetskiing or not; butterflies could wait. I just wanted to be alive and be with everyone that mattered to me.

From a distance, I could hear the fading concluding part of the music from my AirPod, which had fallen few meters away from where I was. As Fido projected the last chorus of “Joy is coming” with so much enthusiasm, a slight glimpse of hope came as I finally fell asleep and lost consciousness.

Waking up a few hours later, I felt the comfort of the hospital bed and as I opened my eyes, I could see a crowd of friendly faces smiling down at me. My family, my partner, even some members of my local church, and a new face, who I later discovered was the Good Samaritan woman named Joy who found me on the street after I lost consciousness and had rushed me to the hospital.

I smiled back, as I couldn’t help but think about how I cheated death yet again.

I was grateful for the gift of life and the opportunity to be in the presence of people who mattered to me. *Phewww what an unbelievable day*.
