What is independent sample t- test?

Independent sample t-test Is a type of test of difference  that seeks to compare mean value of a continuous level variable that is normally distributed.

According to statistic solution, "it assumes  a model where the variables in the analysis are splited into independent and dependent variables"

This indicates that the difference in the mean score of the dependent variable is as a result of the influence in the independent variable.

The independent sample t-test is also among the test of dependencies. That why it is refered to as the independent sample t-test.

Examples of questions that could be answered with the independent sample t-test

The following are typical examples of questions that can be answered using the independent variable t-test.

Are fishes in a particular pond larger than those in another pond?

Im concerned as a fish farmer if the fishes i rear in all my ponds in Abuja are significantly larger than another I. Akwaibom. Then this best approach to answer this question is using the independent sample t-test method.

Is Revenue in Nigeria higher that revenue in Ghana?

I am concerned about the economy to see if the neighbouring Ghana that we are assisting as a country in order to check if thier revenue is higher than Nigeria's Revenue since Nigeria is helping Ghana is some aspects of the economy.

In education I might be concerned if students from a particular school are doing better that students from another school. Then it is essential for me to use the independent sample t-test method.

How to carryout independent sample t-test in SPSS

Independent sample t-test in SPSS isnt difficult to carryout it just for you to perform certain clicks and add the variables you wish to compare the difference in Thier mean scores.

Before carrying out the test, it is essential to check for assumptions of normality.

This could be done using the descriptive statistics using histograms. You can read on using histograms to check for normality.

To carryout independent sample t-test In SPSS,

Go-to Analyze

Click on compare means

Select independent sample t- test

Enter your test variables and your grouping variable of concern e.g fish size, exam score e.t.c

Output of the independent sample t-test

The output of the independent sample t-test has two tables

The first table is the descriptive statistics table.

The second table is the independent sample t-test table which confirms if your variables of concern are significantly higher in your concerned comparison.
