Scales Of Variable Measurement in SPSS
In my last guide, I presented the interface of the application known as SPSS. Having taken everyone (reader) through what SPSS application software looks like.

In this guide, I will be talking about scales of variables that can be entered into spss.
If you are interested in learning about spss, then this guide is for you.

What is measurement scale in SPSS?
Scale of measurement is the unit in which spss understands each variable to be used for analysis.

Considering the entry of these data,

There are three main scales of measurement namely.

Norminal scale

Ordinal scale

Continous or interval scale.

Norminal scale
In norminal scale, the data doesn’t have any distinct difference between another.
According to statistics solution manual, all the data is normal in a nominal scale.
Example of data that falls into this category is color, there is no difference between blue and green colors are just normal.

Another perfect example is gender- which may be male or female. Hold on, wait is there any difference between a male and female when considering for special factors like intelligence?

A child who is intelligent is he or she is exposed to an environment that is in support for education, read and learning new things.

Ordinal scale
Ordinal scale is used to indicate ranks, order or class among list of a given data. I will elucidate more on this.

Example I am a Lecturer in university of Uyo and I want to enter the result sheet of my students into spss to find out about how student cares about my course.

Firstly I have to enter the variables which are registration number, exam score and exam grade.

I just decided to shorten it as such though there may still be other variables that can be added, the point I am trying to bring out here is that of the exam grade scale.
I will definitely have to put a scale for the grade of exams based on the exam scores of each students.

In the course of doing this, some may get an A, B, C or even D or F. can you see that there is an intuitional difference in each grades telling you that the person that had an A is familiar with the exam questions and therefore mearnt that such individual read through lines carefully and passed.

The person that had an F entails that such student isn’t familiar with the exam questions and therefore he or she failed the exam question because it couldn’t be attempted by the individual.

Continous scale
A continous scale represent a ratio or interval scale. This type of scale can be measured.
Example of this scale is the price of rice from 2021 – 2022. Can you figure out that the variable has a value? This is said to be continous scale.

Conclusively
This article has been able to present a brief about scales of measurement in spss. This topic is very essential because without it , data entry into the spss software for analysis may not be successfully achieved.
