Quarry Rock Park. Parks are just not what they used to be.
Quarry Rock Park is in Winston Salem NC. It was originally an old Piedmont Quarry owned by Vulcan Properties. In August of 2017 the Quarry became an actual park with bike trails and walking paths on concrete and asphalt. It is in a bit of a rough area nowadays, but I am on a journey of exploration and will take the path less traveled if I must.

What peaked my interest in exploring parks is riding by school playgrounds and observing how different the landscape is from when I was growing up back in the 1970’s. The school playgrounds feel very cold and controlled. I got the exact same feeling when exploring Quarry Rock Park. There is an observation overlook that gives view to the Quarry itself and the simplistic skyline of Winston-Salem.

Back in the 1980's this was a place where children would ride their bikes up the dirt pathways and used it is a local swimming and fishing hole. Now, it is all fenced off and what made it a place for children exists no more. There are wooded areas that do give shade on the trails, so you do you get the connection to the trees. But when you dig into the Earth and remove the very dirt that connects you to her body, earthing and grounding gets lost. Especially on asphalt as it is not grounding material. There was a moment when I had a laugh. It was late afternoon and off in a distance there was a rooster crowing. He was a reminder that even though it was not the park I would have wanted to play in or have a picnic, there is always something worthy of connecting to anywhere you are.

It feels like we are moving further and further away from the organic and more toward the synthetic version of reality. It is important to keep a balance. To know your Mother Planet, connect with her in a consciously aware state, and still be able to play your role in the arena.

I hope this post inspires someone to go out and play! Connect with The Sun, The Earth. Injoy Nature. Find places that are not feeding the illusion of being in Nature and go find organic Nature. But we can always look for the beauty in it all.
