Lessons learned today
Today I learned two very good lessons the hard way.

## **Lesson 1**

Never type your post directly into the browser (I have already forgotten it, ok let me stop right here and practice this point – I was typing on the browser again, now I have switched over to Word.)

Alright, why should you go the extra mile of typing on another app and copying then pasting the content? Back up, back up back up. The browser (especially chrome) is the most unreliable app I know. At one moment everything is going well and you are typing away your long post, you upload your pictures and embed videos. You check one last time to see if there is any typos or anything you missed. You are satisfied that everything is one hundred and you already see your post earning you hundreds, you hit submit and … horror of horrors!

Where is your thousand Steem post? You just wasted half of your day. Everything is gone and you can either start from scratch or you give up in frustration. Alright, maybe I’m being a little dramatic, but who hasn’t experienced this. I have, many times actually. Today was just too much for me. I took my time to research a topic, started typing it, uploaded pictures (I was using busy.org) and everything was smooth and I was about to finish my article when I had to go to the bathroom. Upon my return, I found the horror of horrors. My wife had clicked on a category on the same page I had been typing on. I’m sure you can imagine my anger. I was furious, at myself for not taking time to back up my post, by typing it on a more reliable app, and at her for not noticing that I was busy with a blog post.

I had to retype the whole thing from scratch, so I decided to get straight to it. I typed and typed, uploaded the pictures, then I tried to embed a video like I was used to on steemit.com, and guess what?

_Horror of horrors_

This is the most annoying thing ever. It had taken me at least 40 minutes to write the article. I lost it in a second. At that moment, I just threw in the towel. I wasn’t gonna type that again. Hell no. I decided to talk about my experience rather.

# Lesson 2

Busy.org is not so great and awesome as I thought. It certainly does a lot of things better than steemit.com, but it has lots of flaws (well maybe I’m exaggerating a bit), but yeah there is room for improvement. The cool features that it has, I have to say, they are really cool, although some are useless like messaging and the draft. If their draft functionality was actually working, then I wouldn’t have gone through what I went through. If there was a way of saving drafts while typing, or if it could save drafts automatically then it would be cool. But I noticed today that after losing my content when I opened drafts, it only gave me a blank slate, I mean what’s the point!

I clicked on the untitled draft with my fingers crossed, hoping to find my hard work safely saved in the drafts, boy was I disappointed.

# Customization

Let’s talk about customization, yes I am a web developer and many people are not and therefore will not care much about this, but I can’t write HTML using the busy.org editor. It beats me why they did not use a full WYSIWYG editor that can do all the things done by cool editors! Worst of all, there seems to be no way of embedding video or even upload a video! That’s it, I will only use this site for minor posts and reading blogs. I have also found out that there are some really cool browser extensions (alert: security risk) that can make steemit.com display some really useful information and do even cooler things than what busy.org does. The best of them, in my opinion, is steemit more info, followed by steemit plus then steemit voting power. I have all three installed, yeah I know, it’s not really necessary, but I wish steemit.com can make their web app have all these features built in.

With Steemit more info, I can change the layout of my post to grid or list, I can see the actual percentage and financial value that each voter contributed, I can easily boost any post I visit using the boost button that it adds. If you want you can try it out. They say it’s best to download it from the GitHub account to prevent auto update and hence reduce the risk of malicious updates. I also installed the Lazarus: form recovery extension in case I forget my lessons. I’m still to figure out how it works.

In conclusion, if you are going to write a large post, avoid typing the post directly in the browser, use a word processor and then copy and paste into the browser, that way you don’t have to retype the whole thing if anything goes wrong. I hope I saved someone the frustrations I went through today.

If you have anything positive to add, feel free to drop a comment. If you disagree with anything that I said, state your reasons why and give alternatives.
