### Learning after you no longer go to school is a life-long task. @intelliguy favorites and links! ### I don't watch documentaries very often. When I do though, I wonder why it's been too long since I've seen one. I like _good_ documentaries... something that I can spend time watching, and walk away learning something that can better my understanding of my life, and the world around me. I would say I watch a documentary, once or twice a year, and I find they help culture my limited knowledge and open me up to new horizons, things I would never have known otherwise. Many people either love regular TV and movies and **hate** documentaries, or they simply avoid anything that comes on the TV screen (except sports)... NOT ALL DOCUMENTARIES ARE BORING. #### ...if it has been a long time since you've seen a documentary, let me share a few that I've enjoyed recently, that you can also get pretty easily, some for free right now: (in no particular order, but read them all, especially the last one) ____ ### Alcohol Will Kill You I found this on Youtube recently. They were doing free liver tests for people walking by, and showed how most people don't realize the damage they are doing to your liver by drinking excess amounts of alcohol. Usually people don't worry about this happening to them until they're in their 40's, 50,'s or 60's... Did you know, that by abstaining from alcohol "before it is too late", and before you get liver disease, you can actually reverse a lot of the damage done to your liver already? I didn't know that quitting alcohol for 6 months could repair your liver until I watched this documentary. To find it, do a search for "alcohol will kill you documentary" and you should find a video about 46 mins in length. _____ ### Pet Fooled Own a cat or a dog? Did you know that it wasn't until World War II that dehydrated pet foods (kibble) started becoming popular because they needed the metal used in cans to make bullets and other military equipment? Dry cat and dog food in a bag puts your pet immediately into dehydration mode. I never knew that... What goes into your pet food? You'll be shocked to find out. It's not just bone meal either. It can be diseased food, food even contaminated by accidental chemical spills not intended for human consumption. Pretty interesting! ____ #### Holodomor the Movie I stumbled upon this one day. I'm _not_ Ukrainian, and I never heard about geneocide of this massive famine where millions of people starved to death between 1932 and 1933 I actually ordered this DVD. One day I was talking to someone about it, and little did I know, they _were_ Ukrainian. They were excited to know I even heard of holodomor and they begged for me to loan them the DVD. It doesn't matter what nationality you are... people starving because they can't farm and are locked into political upheaval is interesting to me. Of course during the holocaust we heard about Jewish people starved to death, but Ukraine too? I didn't know about that.. I'd like to think that during war times, if my country was starving, I'd be smart enough to locate food, grow my own food, hunt, fish, and make it. But so did millions of other people in the Ukraine and that is not how it works. I admit, I'm not smarter than millions of people in this situation. I found this story very shocking. ____ ### Documentaries seem to be always negative Now, it is true, most documentaries have a _negative_ slant to them. Learning about how these things have happened in history shows us how lucky we are today in our own little life cycle. It can also give you great tips on things to look out for in your future. #### Most of all, you can give the illusion that you're smarter than your friends, because you've spent an hour watching a documentary and learned something that most people don't know. * **They become great conversation starters!** * You can learn something you may never know otherwise * There is useful information that can make your life easier * Knowledge is power If we only get our information from newspapers, TV, the internet, and what people are talking about... It only makes us as smart as the next person who gets their information the same way. #### Give documentaries a try. You might like them. As you grow older, you might be more patient and interested in sitting through one. * #### A good free website for LOTS of streamable documentaries is this one: * #### http://www.freedocumentaries.org _Going to that site just now (to double check the link for this post), **I just found a cool documentary** that I can watch for free titled:_ ____ ### Internet's Own Boy Part of the synopsis: "_This film is a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties._" Sounds appealing. I started the movie, and skipped ahead. Next thing I know they're talking about a 12 year old boy who started a site called InfoBase similar to Wikipedia before Wikipedia was even invented! Ok, that grabbed my attention. After I publish this post, I'm going to watch it, for sure! ____ ### So let me know. Do you hate documentaries? Do you ever watch them? Got any good ones to suggest?
