Of all the range of Human insanity, none is more powerful than the delusion that the sufferer is _perfectly sane_. Some perfectly sane Humans can blend in with other citizens, but others...  Others are like Human Hue. She was another part of Pax Humanis. Some were bludgeons. _She_ was a scalpel. Kept separate from the bludgeons of the more infamous section of Pax Humanis, she was employed, and deployed, with precision.

Some called her The Vapour, some called her Shadow. Some named her Hunter. All were accurate. Some called her The Last Scream, which was inaccurate, since she caused others to do so. She was put into play when only one needed to die.

Human Vae considered herself _perfectly sane_. She had paperwork to prove it. She had a logical and rational mind and thought everything through. Including her kills. Some people, she rationalised, needed to perish for the greater good. They were the only ones who were necessary eliminations. She did so quickly, efficiently, and without any other trace of her passage.

She did have a calling card. Literally. A piece of white card with plain black printing in an ancient language: _Mene mene tekel upharsin_. The only embellishment it bore was on the opposite side, the crest of Pax Humanis.

This latest example of a cancer who had to be excised from society was a Deregger personality cult on a station that held with "Might is Right" doctrine dictating the moralistic reasoning behind abducting Havenworlders and subjecting them to experiments for the greater benefit of a chemical corporation that the Personality owned.

The CRC had warned them. The Alliance had told them to stop. The Personality refused, and dared either of them to stop them. Evaluation held that the leader was the only one who needed to die. They had, after all, founded their cult on the concept that said Personality had the secret of immortality and was therefore immortal themselves.

The easiest way to shatter their faith was to find the Personality dead.

Human Hue had studied the maps of the station, infiltrating via cargo imports and crawling through subjective miles of maintenance tunnels to get to the Personality's private bower. Of _course_ they had a private, detachable panic room as their personal bower. It still needed air, water, and egress for the Personality. Where they forgot, Hue could slip by.

All it took was the dead of Station's night, a service door, and a very, very sharp blade. They would find the Personality dead in their luxurious bed, throat slit and their blood decorating the artwork that lined the walls. Their bedmate, asleep beside them, had no idea that the Personality was dead, and wouldn't until they awoke from their slumber wondering why everything was so sticky.

Hue got the Havenworlders out while she was there. This was why she considered herself apart from the larger group of Pax Humanis bludgeons. _They_ would not have considered the Havenworlders, and left them for the rest of the CRC to extract. She was logical, reasoned, calm, and perfectly sane.

She was also merciless, effective, and downright frightening.
