There are words that get worn out, lose their meaning and become very confusing. It happens with the word success. It is very likely that this term was not used in other times, and if it was used, its meaning would have been completely different from our times. Nowadays, success is mainly related to something external to us, to what we can show to others. Society is establishing certain patterns of what it means to be successful. Thus, for example, having a good car, a million dollar house, eating in luxury restaurants, traveling in private planes and wearing exclusive designer clothes, would be indicators of success. According to this, to be successful you need to have a lot of money. The problem with this interpretation is that it leaves success in the hands of very few people and the majority might think that success has nothing to do with them. If we identify ourselves with this model and we try to achieve it, we will most likely be condemned to a life of frustration. But success can be understood in other ways. For example, it can be related to personal achievement.

Looking at it in this way brings it much closer to the reach of each of us. We no longer have to measure ourselves against anything external but against the result of our own efforts. So for example, we could consider ourselves successful by constantly improving our activities, by doing our work better, by writing our publications better, by maintaining discipline in our physical activity, in short... With anything that we can measure ourselves. So that at the end of the road we could conclude that our life was indeed successful. I started the publication with a question: Are you successful...? I have given it some thought and my answer is yes. It is true that I live in a modest house and my vehicle is over fifteen years old. For many that might be an indicator of low success. However, I managed to raise my children and educate them, they are all good people, and now they are parents and are determined to give the best to their children, they are responsible and committed to that task. That makes me feel successful. But also, I still have friendships with many of my students and it fills me with pride when they tell me that I was a good teacher. To me those are great indicators of a successful life. Another word that can also cause a lot of confusion is failure, which can also be measured in many ways.

We may feel like failures because we have not achieved a certain social status. We look at our life and find that we have not taken long trips around the world, that we have not attended the concerts of our favorite artists and that we have never gone to the final of the baseball world series, then we may feel like failures because our expectations were higher than our possibilities. We may also feel failure because of other things closer to home, such as the breakup of a love relationship, or because our children have not lived up to the expectations we placed on them at birth. The feeling of failure can make life miserable, can cause depression and paralyze our initiatives. That's why it's important to learn to see it differently. I like the idea of failure that the Stoics had. For this philosophy failure was a necessity and in many cases it was welcome. The reason for considering it that way was very simple, failure and adversity represent a challenge that gives us the opportunity to put our personal resources and ingenuity to work. Failure does not mean the end of something but the beginning of new things, the opportunity to explore paths we had not considered before. Every failure can be the motivation to realize that we are capable of doing great things. If we assume it in this way, as a possibility to change course and try other paths, failure does not paralyze us, it does not bring us down and can be very profitable. From this perspective, failure would just be one more situation in life and would not have to create so much discomfort.
