She had been released from the hospital a little while ago, and now she was resting on her bed. David had come in to see her after she was released from the hospital, and he had stayed to take care of her for whatever time she had needed. "Listen to me. I'm going to come over in about fifteen minutes. Then I'm going to come back in about three or four hours. Then I'll be back to see you again after that. And if that sounds like a lot of grumpiness, I'm sorry about it. I just want to make sure you're alright. As far as I can tell, you are. So I'll be back in fifteen minutes." "Alright. I'll be here. You know you don't have to spend all of this time with me, right?" "Yes, I know I don't have to spend all of this time with you. But I want to." "Oh, alright." "Alright, I'll be back in fifteen minutes. See you then." The door closed. Evelyn leaned back on her pillows and started to relax for a bit. She looked around the room. The walls were white on the outside, but they were a creamy sort of color on the interior, where her room was. The room was lit by an unflickering wall lamp with a cluster of white bulbs of various sizes and origins. A picture of a waterfall hung on the side of the room, lit so that it went through variations in tone. The room was furnished with a fragile looking bed, with a table, a bookshelf, a bedside stand, and a wardrobe in a complicated ring around the bed. On the bedside stand, there was a television. Evelyn turned the television on and flipped through a few channels. She found some people in a bar, drinking. Drinking always seemed like such a pointless thing to Evelyn. She didn't understand it. It didn't make sense. The people in the bar were all having such a good time, but they were all drinking. She had seen David drinking. It didn't seem to affect him in the slightest. Why do people drink? It just seemed so pointless to her. She got up from her bed, and wandered out of the room again. She passed by the picture of the waterfall again, and paused for a moment. One of the nurses who had helped her with her leg came in, and introduced themselves as Ana. She seemed nice enough. The two sat together, and started a conversation. They talked about the book they were reading on the table, they talked about their families, they talked about places they had both been to. "Do you have any siblings?" Ana asked. "I don't. They were too expensive to take care of." "Oh. Okay." "Oh, you have a lot of siblings? How many does your family have?" "I have seven siblings." "Oh. Wow. That's a lot. I would never be able to house that many people. That seems like a lot of responsibility." "Haha. It is, it sure is. But I feel like I have a connection to all of them. I feel like our family is closer together, for all of the responsibility that goes in between us." "Haha. You're probably right. It's not something I ever considered." The conversation went quiet for a little while. Ana looked around the room, then back at Evelyn. "You know, it's good that David came and spent time with you today. He does a lot for a lot of the patients. But I can tell he's especially concerned about your case. He seems like he really cares about you, deeply." "He's nice. He really is. He seems like a really good person. I'm glad to have met him. He really is a good person. I'm glad he cares about me." "Yeah, he really does." The conversation continued chatting for a little while longer. Then Ana went on to other business and Evelyn went back to her room. She layed down and waited for David to arrive. When David arrived, he came in with a big flurry of jokes and puns. Evelyn could feel herself relax a little more. She felt safe and secure. She knew that David was with her, and that he would always be there for her. The thought relaxed her, and she could feel rest swelling up through her. Eveyyn quickly felt herself drift off to sleep. When she woke up again, it was much later. The sun was setting outside, and she could tell that David was not going to be there anymore. They didn't have much, so when money ran out the two of them would often just do what they could to survive. But if Evelyn didn't want to worry about money in her life, she could always live off of her sister's money. She looked at her sister's name in the phone book, and called her up. When she spoke to Julie, she could immediately tell that Julie was getting off of work. Just hearing her voice made her feel happy. "Hey there." "Hey. Oh, hey. I can hear you working in the background." "Yeah. I am. I'm at work, remember? I'm still thinking about this all day." "What are these all?" "They're just some random things I'm working on. They're pretty hard to nail down sometimes, but I'm getting there. Since I see these on a regular basis, I'm usually always thinking about them, to try to improve them." "Alright. You know I'm not into business. You know what I'm into." "Huh? You mean the house? Yeah. Well, the insurance is paying off. Which is cool, to be able to sell it. But it's just money, right? We don't need money if we don't want it. We can get by. I'll just take care of you and the baby. And I still want to be a part of that, you know?" "You can still be a part of that. You've already done so much for me. I'll be booking you in for the next few appointments. It's nothing I can't handle. But call me if you need help with anything. Let's just have fun, alright?" "Yeah, yeah. I know. I just…I just needed to hear you say that tonight. I still love you, Julie. You know that." "I love you back, Evelyn. Please take care of my baby. That's all I ever want. You're such a great person. You're the best. I don't know how I've made it through all this, without you." "You just went through a tough thing, and you managed to handle it perfectly. You never showed that you were struggling at all. You didn't give up. You know I'd do anything for you, right?" "I know. Love you." "I love you back." The phone call ended, and Evelyn felt a little less lonely than she had been.
