## Bedtime Story

### Prompt

> There’s a good coffee bean, an evil tea bag, and a magic pot. They’re all at a New Year’s party. The fate of the year will be decided by what transpires between the bean and the bag as the clock strikes midnight. Tell us their story!

Evie smoothed the fabric of her son’s brow. He was so extra-gorgeous when he was sleepy.

"Mom, tell me the story again. Tell me the story about you, dad, and me. Please?"

"You’ve heard it a thousand times. Surely you’re tired of that old story, my love?" Evie, sighed. She moved her chair closer to her son. He was lying on a rug on the bedroom floor, covered in a warm, fleece throw that promised to keep the cold at bay. She hitched an end of the throw over her skirt and settled in to tell him the tale he adored.

"Well, I met your father at a New Year’s Eve party. No teabag and coffee bean had ever formed a friendship before, but it was love at first sight for me. Your father was a good-looking bean with an aura of goodwill that perfumed the air He was totally irresistible."

"I look just like him, don’t I?"

"You know that you do. Obviously, you have a little of me in you, but you mostly take after your father," she said, lightly ruffling his fringe.

"Go on, mom. Tell me about Sirus Pot. Tell?"

Evie laughed at her son’s enthusiasm. “I’m getting there. Do you want the whole story or just the pieces you like best?"

"Tell me everything, mom." Please?"

"Within an hour of our first conversation, your father asked me to marry him. It would be a ‘blend of perfection’, he believed, a truly heavenly thing. Of course, all the good citizens of Beverageland were horrified when they realized that Evie Teabag and Adam Coffee Bean were in love. But, as you know, they were, really, mortified when they heard that Sirus Pot, a pot with a reputation for neutrality and fairness, was willing to do the honors and blend us into unity.” Evie took a deep breath. Memories of Adam, his bravery, and his beauty flooded her soul. She caught an errant tear before it fell, hoping that her baby boy hadn’t seen it.

"Are you crying, mom?"

"No, ‘cos not. Now where was I?"

"You’re going to tell me about Sirus Pot’s magic," he said, prodding her gently.

"The good citizens were terrified. They were afraid of an irregular blend, a marriage that might bear bad fruit, so to speak,” Evie took another breath. "Some tried to convince Sirus Pot that I was an evil teabag that had ensnared a hapless coffee bean with my wiles. Others attempted to bribe Sirus to sabotage the brew. While the ragtag band of beans and bags vowed to expel both your father and me if we survived.

"You and dad were so brave, mom. I wish I could’ve gotten to know my dad." Her son’s little voice drifted over her. He sounded sleepy—a cue for her to wrap up the telling.

"Sirus Pot was, indeed, a magic receptacle. He heralded the dawn of a new age. Thanks to his devious efforts, the crowd was distracted until it was too late. The clock struck midnight and your father and I swirled and blended, and we danced on the bubbles of steam that rose from the pot. We sang our own exquisite song; its tune filled the air, and even the most ardent naysayers were quiet. Well, they were quiet for a moment anyway," Evie said quietly as Adam's memory washed over her, as if he were in the room with them.

"Of course, their awe didn't last," Evie straightened in her chair, bracing herself for the most difficult part. "They reacted with vengeance as soon as the steam cooled; as soon as the brew was poured; as soon as your father and I were mixed together as grounds in the pot," she swallowed the lump in her throat. "Next thing we knew, the good citizens flooded Sirus Pot, which was in the sink by this time. The water lifted both of us out of the pot and carried us over and down the stream into the abyss. Your father couldn’t pull himself together; he simply drifted off." Finally, she let her tears fall. "Me, being the teabag that I am, well, I stayed in one piece. I landed on a shelf underground and managed to survive."

"After losing your father, I didn’t have that much will to go on, but finding out that I was going to have you changed my mind. I’m so glad that you came along. Just look at you, my beautiful boy; look at the result of the union between Adam Coffee Bean and Evie Teabag."

"I know mom," he said sleepily, repeating his mother's famous words.

"I’m the most beautiful beanbag in the world. I was the first of my kind, and I’ve brought a unique sense of comfort to the world. I go perfectly with tea or coffee, and I'm definitely one of the best places on earth to enjoy either one."
