In the wisdoms of all the different nations out there, the one thing that seems to be coherent among all of them, (except for those who reject the reality of life) is that life is so diverse and so demanding of humans.

We can all agree that preparing the future generations for life entails a lot more than 'just theory', it requires that theory be put into practice and be known in real life scenarios.

I say this, after reading the following:




>In 1744, when George Washington was just a twelve-year-old boy, the Collected Chiefs of The Indian Nations met to discuss a letter from the College of William & Mary suggesting that they “send twelve of their young men to the college, that they might be taught to read and write.” The Chiefs sent the following reply:

>Sirs,

>We know that you highly esteem the kind of learning taught in Colleges, and that the Maintenance of our young Men, while with you, would be very expensive to you.  We are convinc’d, therefore, that you mean to do us Good by your Proposal; and we thank you heartily. But you, who are wise, must know that different Nations have different Conceptions of things; and you will therefore not take it amiss, if our Ideas of this kind of Education happen not to be the same with yours. We have some experience of it. Several of our Young People were formerly brought up at the colleges of the Northern Provinces; they were instructed in all your sciences; but, when they came back to us they were bad Runners, ignorant of every means of living in the Woods, unable to bear either Cold or Hunger, knew neither how to build a cabin, take a Deer, or kill an Enemy, spoke our Language imperfectly, were therefore neither fit for Hunters, Warriors, nor Counselors; they were totally good for nothing. We are, however, not the less oblig’d by your kind Offer, tho’ we decline accepting it; and, to show our grateful Sense of it, if the Gentlemen of Virginia will send us a Dozen of their Sons, we will take care of their Education; instruct them in all we know, and make Men of them.

The wisdom behind these words, although some may think that this was simply a slap in the face to the frats, is that the education system is broken and judging by the date of this letter, it has been broken for a LONG time!

The education system as such should help build an individual, TO PREPARE the individuals for life and to teach the individuals how to work with other individuals in productive and constructive ways.

The theory is what can be said to be "learning from the past" or learning "what is already known", but the reality is that when theory is all that exists, then there is no real life experience there, no real life 'know how' there. 

Instead of getting all 'offended' and 'melting down' over hearing or reading the truth, the real world experience teaches us to learn from it, get on with our lives, to do what needs to be done in the most effective and constructive manner so that we see a productive outcome.

There is a lot to be learned from this letter and the wisdom behind it and I dare say it applies to the real world we live in today. 

Is the education system still broken?
