Travis has never been a fan of superstition. He doubted everything, even the existence of ghosts, but an experience made him believe that some things were true, though this belief didn't last for long as things went sideways in the long run.
It was a thing with cookies and fortunes. Travis will never forget the life-wrenching incident that occurred in his life the moment he chose to believe.

"What's this rumor about you getting a marriage proposal just like it was said on a piece of paper that you had found inside a cookie?" Travis asked Judy, his friend.

Judy had just gotten a marriage proposal from the man of her dreams, just like the paper she found in her cookie had predicted. She was on a trip, and she stopped at a cafê to get breakfast. After eating, as she was about to leave, one of the workers handed a bag to her. She opened it to see a cookie inside. Judy was happy that the waitress had gifted her, but she never knew that the cookie held very important messages.

Once she got home, she pulled out the cookie to eat, Judy saw the paper. It read, *'He'll be here soon, and he's the one you are to say yes to.'*
Two days later, her boyfriend proposed to her, and she said yes. The news spread like wildfire, and Travis had to come so he could confirm the authenticity of the news.

"Travis, I know you don't believe in the supernatural, but it is real. At first, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that paper, I thought it was fake, but Kelvin proposed to me and I said yes because he's the man I've always wanted. You really should change your beliefs sometime so you won't miss out on a great opportunity." Judy advised Travis, but he still had his doubts.

One morning, as Travis was doing his jogging routine, he stopped by a coffee shop and walked in.
"Hi, what can I get you?" The barista in charge of serving customers asked him.

"Can I get a cookie with my coffee?" Travis asked.

"Yeah, we have a few baked stuff that you may like. Do you have a particular one in mind?" The barista asked him.

Travis motioned for her to come closer, and he looked around to see that no one was staring in their direction. He cupped his hand around her ears and whispered. "Fortune cookies."
The lady giggled and left his table. A few minutes later, she returned with a cup of coffee, and a plate filled with cookies. Travis thanked her, and she walked away.

Travis didn't bother taking his coffee, he opened all three cookies and found the one with the fortune letter. It read, *'A big fortune awaits. In two days you will come into an enormous wealth.'*
A smile spread across Travis's face as he read and read the note again. It didn't take long after Travis left the coffee shop, he went to the bank and withdrew a huge sum of money. He went to a car lot and got the car he had always wanted.
He drove to Judy's house to share the news with her. She was surprised to see him in the car.

"Travis, what's going on? Did you win the lottery?" She asked him.
Travis showed the fortune letter to her still beaming with smiles.
"I thought you didn't believe in any of this. What changed?" She asked him.

"Well, I had a change of heart." Travis replied.

"Travis, I don't want to be a killjoy, but don't you think you should've waited to see if it was real before spending the money you have? Some of these things can be fake sometimes." Judy said.

"Yours wasn't fake, but you think mine is? I have a strong feeling that it's real, Judy, so please keep your opinions to yourself. For a minute, I thought you were happy for me." Travis snapped at her and drove away.

In two days, Travis had spent half of the money he had saved up, including his rent fee for the apartment he was living in. He waited on his couch the whole day, but there was no alert. The day turned into days, and days into weeks, but nothing came, and Travis got tired of waiting. He went back to the coffee shop and demanded to see the lady who had served him the cookie.

"Where's my money?" He yelled at her.

"Your money? Are you lost? What in the world will I be doing with your money?" The lady asked him.

"The cookie you gave me said I would come into money in two days. It's been weeks, and there's still no money. I need my money back." Travis yelled, drawing the attention of the other customers.

"Is this about the cookie? You asked for a fortune cookie, and I gave you one. How would I have known that you believed in it? I thought you just wanted it. This isn't the north pole or a mystical cafê. You have to leave now." The lady said in response.

Travis couldn't believe his ears. He held her by her collar and screamed for his money. The customers and other workers intervened and pulled him out of the shop.
"Give me back my money!!!" Travis screamed.

"It was just a paper, you dumbass. Who would give you a fortune cookie just because you asked for it?" One of the customers yelled back at him.

Travis went home feeling devastated and angry. He looked at the car he had bought. He tried to return it and ask for a refund, but it was against the company's policy so he was kicked out.
He wished he had continued in his disbelief of the supernatural. Now he had to start over again to save up money for his rent which was almost due, all because of a fake fortune cookie.
