Most weekends my two sons (6 and 8)and I go to the woods and explore. We have been doing this for about a year now. # My Childhood When I was a boy I grew up in a small town where the country side was on your doorstep. I would spend most of my free time playing in woods and forests, building dens and climbing trees. This was when I was between 6 and 9 years old. Great fun , Great place and I learned a lot. I am the youngest of three and there is a big age gap so I would go to the woods with my gang of friends rather than my siblings. I lost touch with the gang years ago when I and they moved to different places but I have so many fond memories. The world seemed so big back then. I would over turn a rock and there would be a new creature under there that I had never seen before. We would run into another gang and learn about either making friends or fighting enemies. All innocent of course but valuable life lessons. Everyday was a new adventure . I would get up early ( 6am) and pack my back pack. A full survival kit for my younger self consisted of: Pen knife, fishing line and some tackle and sandwiches. Off to meet up with the gang and muck about. We would expand our knowledge of our territories by exploring and push ourselves as a group by trying new things. Well the world is a different place nowadays and there is no chance I would let my lads do that. But..... I will teach them the old ways when I consider them responsible enough. # Our Woods We have a wood we go to. It is a fair drive away but worth it. We rarely see anyone about and it is fairly untouched. The trees fall over and rot back to earth. The animals go about their business. And you can sense that in the air. There is a 'buzz' that makes you feel alive. It brings out your primal side. Without my intervention the boys almost immediately find a stick which they brandish proudly. Not in a violent way but in a steadfast way. It is almost like they are silently speaking to our ancestors and saying ' Thank you for looking after us, time to rest, We will protect the forest now'. You can see it in their eyes. We have a lot of fun. # The Nature Walk We park up and get ourselves sorted. Then it is off into the woods. Basically the wood is on a hill and we start at the bottom. On the way up we look out for things of interest and I try to educate them on whatever comes up. Lots of mud , danger and nature lie before us but we perceiver. Just avoiding mud is a big lesson for a six year old! I want them to grow up with a sense of respect for nature and anything worthy of respect. So as always nature can teach us the lessons we need. When we get to the top ,after a good explore, we take in the view and then run back down the hill as fast as we can! Sometimes we are racing cars and other times we are spaceships. It doesn't really matter because we are in the woods doing exercise and learning. My philosophy is that the closer we are to how humans lived 10,000 years ago( in respect to diet, exercise and lifestyle) the more in tune we are to embrace modern life for the better. I can honestly say that being in the woods with my sons is my favourite place to be. Feel free to follow our adventures. I took these photos with my Kodak Pixpro AZ401 Personal note: It is just my personal preference but I prefer not to post pictures of my sons online. I feel that when they are still under my tutelage it is not for me to make statements on their behalf. When they are old enough the world is theirs to claim as they see fit. I realise this is a somewhat antiquated view of things and I respect others ways and viewpoints. I was inspired to write this post by my friends @valorforfreedom ( who has helped me and others with every aspect of steemit, right from day one.) And @castleberry ( who is an great photographer and one of the most chilled out guys you could hope to meet.) @jist
