HOW TO BE RIGHT AND WRONG ALL AT THE SAME TIME
Message from a godbrother:
Using quotes, relevant quotes of course, is not to 'hide'. It is to come to a solution on a certain matter. Srila Prabhupada enforces this program, this behaviour. As far as possible to back up with guru, sadhu and sastra.
Otherwise we are left with the mind, isn´t it? Its accepting and rejecting.
But I certainly agree with you if the ´quotes´ are irrelevant or loose.

My reply:
How to be right and wrong at the same time... Bible thumping Christians have quotes out the wazoo...

It is like the pastime of Jiva Goswami and the pandit. The pandit was touring and debating with scholars all over India. He was undefeated in his shastric correctness. But it is by all the shastras that Krishna is to be "known" ... as in realized. He had not come to that point because without the mercy of the pure devotee it is not possible. (Yeah sure, occasionally, like once in a blue moon Krishna himself will appear before someone) but for 99.99% of us the way is through the pure devotee empowered by the Lord.

So this scholar had not actually taken shelter of a pure devotee. His heart was still hard and his knowledge was all in his head. So Rupa Goswami didn't want to spend time debating with someone who approached him like that. He signed the pandit's paper that he had been defeated. Jiva goswami became furious that this nonsense pandit was showing this paper to everyone and challenged him to a debate. Jiva goswami defeated the undefeated pandit. And the man went away morose and depressed.

When Rupa Goswami found out about this he asked Jiva Goswami if the pandit had accepted Krishna consciousness as the conclusion. Jiva admitted that he had not. Rupa was furious and rejected Jiva. Poor Jiva left Vrndavan and lived in a cave on the edge of the dhama for about a year. Eventually he was pardoned.

But what I am getting at here is that it is possible to be "right" and wrong all at the same time. Without awakening "love" in the heart the point of it all is missed. Like offering opulent food to the Lord. If there is no love in the offering, it doesn't mean it is automatically accepted by the Lord just because it is fancy and spiced this way and that. Srila Prabhupada is unlimitedly tolerant being the pure representative of Sri Krishna Chaitanya. So much is presented in his name that is really not offerable. Both food and debate.

In Kali yuga people have a taste for arguing just for the sake of arguing and they really have no inclination to reach the Conclusive Truth.
