I am always stunned by old structures which has literally stood the test of time. If there's one thing I noticed about the churches built in the 1800s to the 1900s it is that these buildings have strong (solid) foundations that withstand even the harshest storms or the shocking earthquakes that swept the Philippines time and time again. 

What I usually look for when I visit new towns are these Spanish-era-old churches and structures which still stand tall in cities all over the country. When I visited Bacolod of late, I informed my sister that I want to visit an old church near our hotel. I was glad that she agreed to go sightseeing places whilst we're in the city proper.

I do not recall what the name of the church is, but this was in close proximity to SM Bacolod. This was also near their town Plaza. The structures in small towns is the same - very Spanish-inspired still: you have the Church, the plaza, the market nearby, a school or two. Have you also noticed this? 

I silently prayed a small prayer when I managed to visit - this is one "travel tip" I got from my sister: that whenever you visit a church for the first time, make a small prayer or a wish. It is said that it's got its magic when you do that. Though I do not believe in luck because I believe that God hears us wherever we talk to Him, I kind of made this "wishing/praying" as a habit so I usually find myself doing it regardless.
