Tsunami Warning Prompts 3-AM Call To Work
#
Travel Time of Possible Tsunami

Early Tuesday morning a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off of the coast of Kodiak Is. Alaska. Receding waters in a Kodiak harbor prompted the US Coast Guard to issue a Tsunami watch for the western coast of the United States and Hawaii. As a result my phone jolted me out of bed at 03:00.

As a vessel operator for an oil spill response company, my crew and I are responsible for the pre-booming operations at one of the local refineries. Per state law we do a full 360 degree containment of vessels while they are engaging in fuel transfer operations. Our "boom" is the first line of defense if there is an oil spill into the sound. As oil is lighter than water it floats on the surface. Our containment boom is a floating barrier anchored around the vessel to capture as much of the oil as possible before it is carried to surrounding beaches and sensitive environmental areas. We then have the training and the equipment to remove the oil from the water and do any necessary beach clean-ups. The Tsunami warning early this morning prompted the vessel to shut down transfer operations and to vacate the terminal to lessen the chances of major damage and environmental impact.

Due to the sea state caused by small craft winds and the possible massive influx of water that a tsunami would cause, an additional crew member was called in to help the early morning operations. Nothing quite like a 3-AM response to a call, 25knt winds in your face and the adrenaline of a tsunami warning to get your blood pumping. After we were done with our work the Coast Guard called off the tsunami warning for this area. Our response system was put through a test and we now have experience preparing for the ever looming potential of an earthquake triggered tsunami. We are fortunate that nothing came of the warning here in our neck of the woods but I will be watching for updates on the island of Kodiak as I have family and friends that live there.

As always -Thanks for the read and happy Steeming -
