I came from a family where people became rich without education, most of my maternal uncles were so wealthy, you had to book appointments to see them no matter who or what you are. They didn't get secondary or tertiary education, they felt being able to read and write, having a common sense, being hardworking and having a vision is how you get enough experience to understand how the world truly works. Truth was, they were very intelligent, the knew how to read market situations and trends in their various business, the understood what people wanted and the prices they were willing to pay, this made them excel in their various businesses. They made it quite clear that going to school only gets you educate, it doesn't empower or enrich one. They'd experienced what poverty felt like and sometimes, this can be the motivation.
#### Money: A Cyclical Process.
Virtually everything revolved around money, it felt like people could not attain fulfillment or purpose, especially because you needed money to achieve almost everything. People who dedicated their time to bagging degrees were seen as potential *time wasters*. This was primarily because most young adults in Nigeria have to take on responsibilities early on in life whether they're financially equipped or not. Age Matters a lot to the young Nigerian. They want to become big achievers; get a job, get six figures and get married before 30. These big dreams are often tied to education or business. It's always about these two choices. When a person tries to merge education with business, it's considered that they'll become too old before they can master the two options. Because the options are limited, people are limited in so many aspects of life, and never creative enough to break this cycle.
#### Futility & Fufillment
In Nigeria, some business people feel degree holders are bereft of knowledge which they can convert to monetary value, while some degree holders feels that owning a degree makes them more better, wiser and equipped with western knowledge. There's always a divide between these two people. In fact, people who have made money without needing education always feels that there's this wastefulness and futility to education. While this is totally untrue, Nigeria's socioeconomic setting makes people see education as only a means to financially liberate themselves, some people who are into business as well, do so simply to make money and not really because it was their passion. In Nigeria, the economic situation makes it difficult for people to go into business, a profession or a career simply because the main motive is passion. People (not everyone) don't have the luxury of attaining fulfillment and making money at the same time because of how socioeconomic setting of the country.
#### Monetary Value: A Subjective View
The government themselves hardly make excellence in education a priority. There are no external incentives to education except to be learned. A lot of people knows this already. Another thing is, many people wish to be educated because of the dichotomy and the discrimination. Uneducated people are not seen as people who can bring in any value, that's why some people who are already accomplished, wealthy and fulfilled, seek to get education just to completely cement their status as statutory. This is particularly discriminative, seeing that the employment system deployed in the most lucrative jobs in Nigeria are nepotistic in nature. Inasmuch as the main reason for education should be knowledge and being learned because it's too expensive to actually acquire, we often see it as a means to better the future. I've seen people who sell their properties to get degrees, while this to totally good, the motive behind this move makes it somewhat flawed. Now, the country isn't built to utilize people who are professionals in their field. So while we have educated people who are tested and trusted in their field, we do not have jobs for them, hence the use for profession becomes null, unless they choose to be entrepreneurs.
#### A Societal Standard?
At the moment, getting a Nigerian degree is relatively expensive, and this isn't because of how it's valued in the Nigerian currency. The reason is that it's not worth it because the use cases are rare. People get degrees to later dump them after spending their money. However, what makes education expensive is because a lot of people are vying for degrees making it quite competitive. This is because people attach a compulsion to education not because it primarily takes them off illiteracy but because it's a societal standard to often determine who a successful person is. At the end of the day, lucrative professional are rendered void because its use cases in forms of jobs and platforms are not readily available. We must redefine the purpose of education if it's ever going to be relevant. The while economic systems in Nigeria are rotten to the core, this would be difficult to forestall change. At the end of the day, we need to start creating and developing real-time skills that are relevant to survival, people needs to start being owners of their business, it takes a lot of work.

> **Interested in some more of my works?**
##### [A Personal View Into The Meaning Of Spirituality (ecoTrain QOTW)](https://hive.blog/hive-123046/@josediccus/a-personal-view-into-the-meaning-of-spirituality-ecotrain-qotw) ##### [Why You Couldn't Create Good Contents In 2021, Why You Still Wouldn't In 2022.](https://hive.blog/hive-167922/@josediccus/why-you-couldn-t-create-good-contents-in-2021-why-you-still-wouldn-t-in-2022) ##### [A Psychoanalytic Dive Into Incentivized Loyalty](https://hive.blog/hive-167922/@josediccus/a-psychoanalytic-dive-into-incentivized-loyalty) ##### [The Nigerian/African Disposition On Marriage As An Endowment](https://hive.blog/hive-181017/@josediccus/lghdiell) ##### [Living & Living Unintentionally (The Financial Repercussion)](https://hive.blog/hive-167922/@josediccus/living-and-living-unintentionally-the-financial-repercussion)

#### @Josediccus, your brother-in-pen & heart
*I'm hoping to reach more people who are broken at heart and spirit, so share on any platform or reblog*
###
[My Twitter handle](https://mobile.twitter.com/PERCIVAL_JOEY)
Posted Using [LeoFinance Beta](https://leofinance.io/@josediccus/degrees-platforms-and-business-opportunities-are-we-limited-in-our-choices)
