Free speech & Decentralization: An Emotional Rather Than A Logical Discourse?

Some time last week, I came across a full-blown rant by someone yesterday on the chain and it's been a long time since I saw such rants back on steemit. I think rant posts get the most views on the chain, but sometimes people tend to shy away from controversy, especially if you're a silent observer who is keen to learn.

Although the rant was probably wild and uncalled for, the manner and approach were malicious, and the intent was dastardly, but you could tell it has been brewing for a long time. It is like people choosing outbursts as the only weapon if they feel powerless, but sometimes, people deviate from what's normal and acceptable and it becomes a full-blown war.

Many do not know how to draw the line especially when they're emotional, their raw reflexes reflect some instincts, and *BAAM!* they lose control of the discourse. It happens to anyone, that's why 100% emotional control over what we say on web2 or web3 is virtually impossible.

Sometimes people tap into the idea of decentralization as the main reason why the inclusion of everything should be possible be it the good bad and the ugly. Howbeit, I think pure decentralization hasn't been 100% practiced because the tools to do aren't readily available. People still have flawed ideas of what decentralization is.

> I understand that there's no manual to true decentralization

........**but one thing I know is that governance in any human institution, be it geographical, spatial, or on the internet is important, because ultimate freedom creates irregularities and we have to understand that our excesses need rules, codes or conducts to be kept in check.**

Living in the denial that decentralization is true freedom, hence our excesses should be allowed is totally wrong, without conduct, every human system will implode and this is what we should understand. Another thing that people often latch on to is the idea of **free speech**. Free speech often comes with an emotional discourse, sometimes people lose the idea of what's viable and decided to choose what they truly believe.

> However, the blockchain is foolproof

.......and **"deletion"** is virtually impossible. If people want to be seen, all they need to do is write and hit the "publish" button. The space affords people that opportunity, be it a post about **"Litecoin",* **"a conspiracy theory"** a *"how-to"* or even the biggest truth that might obviously be banned in some of the web2 platforms out there.

However, people tend to mistake downvotes for bans or deletions. But it's neither of the two, however, the Blockchain creates protocols, and people come means and influence comes up with contradicting ideas to counter these protocols, hence the discussion about what is and what isn't.

### The Deductions From An Emotional Side Of Things

In fact, the idea these days is that if one is being downvoted, then he or she is trying to be banned or silenced. But in reality, this isn't true. The blockchain is built with its values and capacity of true governance and decentralization, but we all know that the influx of people and their different ideologies might tweak the default definition of the chain.

Being demonetized by disagreement can happen via downvotes and it's easy for people to think it's being silenced or being banned but in reality, the chain is built for any of these two to never happen. But due to the emotions that come with the attachment of rewards, there's the tendency to always think that downvotes take away free speech.

*While it doesn't, what it does is to tilt people to a particular course of discourse, realign their activities and create a different type of change in their on-chain activities*

This too might be a certain aspect of control that shouldn't exist, but we all know that people, irrespective of their investment, intent, or means come with their beliefs that might be flawed, but we often let go of it because they're filling a void that we deem necessary for the growth and progress of the chain.

The idea of decentralization comes with a lot of discourse that we might not be able to emotionally handle, the argument of what is and what shouldn't be is always a recipe for stagnation.

### The "Value" Argument

Recently, the social aspect of hive has come under scrutiny as to what's valuable and what isn't, but this is another topic for another day. Moreover, I think what we need to prevent is hitting a state of impasse, although this is impossible.

We cannot get everyone to align on what is viable, rather the idea is for people to individually work on themselves in a bid to establish understanding, decency, leniency and create a win-win situation between the chain and its populace. It's also very difficult to achieve this, some people are dogged in their resolve, unhinged and impenetrable by any form of goodwill and this is why this conversation might never end.
