Step-by-Step Instructions: Ruffle Bucket Hat

โœ… STITCHES USED

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

inc = increase (2 hdc in same stitch)

๐Ÿ”น Step 1: Start the Crown (Top Circle)

    I started with ch 4

1. Ch 4, then sl st into the first ch to form a ring.

2. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).

3. Make 11 hdc into the ring. (12 hdc total including ch-2)

4. Join with sl st to top of ch-2.

๐Ÿ”น Step 2: Increase the Crown

Keep increasing evenly in a circle.
5. Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each stitch around (24 sts). Sl st to join.
6. Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next โ€“ repeat around. (36 sts)

7. Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next โ€“ repeat. (48 sts)

8. Continue increasing this way (add 1 hdc between increases each round) until the circle is about 6.5โ€“7 inches wide or fits the crown of the head.

๐Ÿ”น Step 3: Build the Hat Body (Straight Sides)

Once the crown fits, stop increasing.

9. From here on, just hdc in each stitch around.

10. Repeat this for 7โ€“10 rounds, depending on how deep you want the hat. I used 10 rounds. Try it on as you go.

๐Ÿ”น Step 4 The checkerboard style (optional)

I used alternating colors (colour black and white)in the down section just before just before the ruffle stitch

11. Switch colors every after 1 Row.

12. Use the carrying technique (carry the unused yarn along the row inside the stitches) or cut and weave ends.

๐Ÿ”น Step 5: Ruffle Brim

This is what gives the hat its cute flair!

13. Round 1 of Ruffle: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each stitch around โ€“ doubles the stitch count.

๐Ÿ”น Step 6: Finish

15. Fasten off.
16.I use the yarn needle to weave in all ends securely.

๐Ÿ’ก Notes:

The ruffles come from the increases. The more you increase, the wavier they become.

You can make the brim longer by adding more rounds even after the ruffle begins.

Blocking the hat can help shape it better if needed.
