# Steem is in a great position going forward In an interview with Bloomberg yesterday, Blockchain Capital's Spencer Bogart said that next year will be the year of vertical construction. Um, what's that? Well he thinks that as we move into the next phase of crypto and blockchain adoption, we will see things of value and use-case being built on open public blockchains. More so than anything we have seen to date. And he thinks that will likely happen on the already existing projects as opposed to new comers coming in and taking market share. According to Bogart, we are likely about to enter the 5th era of crypto and blockchain adoption/development. The previous eras can loosely be defined as the following: - 2009 - 2011 : Bitcoin Won’t Work - 2012 - 2013 : Tulips and Criminals - 2014 - 2016 : Blockchain, Not Bitcoin - 2017 - 2019 : Horizontal Competition - 2020 - ???? : Vertical Construction During the last cycle (horizontal competition) we saw all kinds of ICOs and new public blockchains popping up all over the place. Lots of competition, but not a lot of substance. That is why it is refereed to as the horizontal competition era. It was driven by rampant speculation and a race to become the next bitcoin, or bitcoin 2.0. However, now we are likely to transition to actual growth. As we transition back to actually building things of value on open public blockchains, steem is positioning itself very well to be a place where useful things can be built. Things like SMTs and Communities, as well as the back-end scaling upgrades, will go a long ways in that regard.
