 On the banks of a mythical river, the Arlanza, at the very point where the main road traces a crossbow curve between gloomy pine forests, memorable, yet undoubtedly colossal, ruins attract, like an irrepressible siren's call, the attention of travelers who, occasionally or punctually, pass through this mysterious area in the heart of Burgos.  We find ourselves near a medieval village we already had the opportunity to discuss not long ago, named Covarrubias, and the colossal ruin before our astonished gaze was, in those distant medieval times, one of the richest and most important monasteries in the entire country: San Pedro de Arlanza.  Many outrages were committed against this illustrious example of sacred architecture, but the worst of all—much worse, even, than the looting of the extraordinary Romanesque paintings that decorated the interior of its apse, including the dragon, which traveled to New York and ended up on display at The Cloisters in the Metropolitan Museum of Art—was, without a doubt, its offering as a cruel holocaust to the thirsty altars of time.  A la vera de un río mítico, el Arlanza, en ese mismo punto donde la carretera general traza una curva de ballesta entre sombríos pinares, unas ruinas memorables, pero indudablemente colosales, atraen, como un irreprimible canto de sirena la atención de los viajeros, que, puntual u ocasionalmente, se desplazan por esta arcana zona del corazón de Burgos.  Nos hallamos en las cercanías de un pueblo medieval que ya tuvimos ocasión de comentar no hace mucho, de nombre Covarrubias y el coloso en ruinas que tenemos frente a nuestra sorprendida visión, fue, en aquellos lejanos tiempos medievales, uno de los monasterios más ricos e importantes de todo el territorio nacional: San Pedro de Arlanza.  Fueron muchos los desmanes cometidos con este ilustre ejemplo de arquitectura sagrada, pero el peor de todos -mucho peor, incluso, que el saqueo de las extraordinarias pinturas románicas que decoraban el interior de su ábside, dragón incluido, que viajaron a Nueva York para terminar expuestas en el museo metropolitano de The Cloisters- fue, sin duda, el de haberlo ofrecido en cruel holocausto a los sedientos altares del tiempo.
