For at least a couple months a particular snake has been giving my family a bit of trouble, and unsure if it was venomous or not, I decided today was the day I had to kill it.

Today we heard an unfamiliar noise, and to me it sounded like a potential bird, so I grabbed my camera and began heading outside the house to search for the noise. It only took a few seconds though before I noticed a snake with a rat in its mouth moving along the rafters of our house. I quickly realized this was the snake we have encountered several times, and one that has showed some signs of aggression towards us. It has successfully escaped each time, but only after putting on a big show and acting very territorial.

This time I wasn't going to let this snake get away, so I asked Srey-Yuu to be my eyes and ears on the exterior of the house, and while keeping my eyes on the snake, I asked my wife to grab me a piece of long bamboo. With a couple of pokes, I hoped to scare the snake away from the house, but it only relocated to the front of the house, settling at the top of the roof where all visitors must walk directly under.

With a house constantly full of kids and babies, I was willing to take a little bad karma in exchange for piece of mind. Our house has no ceiling, so this snake can visit anytime, even when we're sleeping, and has visited us in the middle of the night a few times too, flirting with slithering in through the front door. I was able to poke the snake a bit, hoping to make it descend or battle me, but I accidentally stabbed it with the pole, causing it to double back and attempt to come down the bamboo and bite me, so I pushed harder and twisted so that it was trapped and couldn't come towards me.

After a several minutes standoff, I finally decided I had given this snake a grave wound, released the bamboo and ran away from the snake. I have already seen this snake throw itself from the roof once, and there are actually flying snakes here in the Cardamom Mountains, so I certainly didn't want to have it on top of my head. In the GIF at the beginning of the post, you can see it drop down the left side of the house.

I ran around the corner and was able to sling the snake away from the house and stun it before lobbing its head off with shovel. Ultimately I still couldn't identify even in death, but the 5 or 6 snakes I found online that look very similar are all non-venomous. I am 90% sure it was non-venomous, but I can't take risks in such a remote area in a country without an anti-venom bank. I feel a little bad about the situation because I don't like to take a life if I can avoid it.

My wife has been uneasy going to the bathroom at night for far too long, and Monkey-B nearly stepped on this snake a few days ago. It was obviously not intimidated by all the times I chased it off the property peacefully, so I am glad it didn't get away this time, and fortunately or unfortunately I can monetize this incident by sharing it with you all.
