Last week, I posted a [tribute to my parents](https://steemit.com/blog/@karencarrens/a-tribute-to-my-parents-their-story-the-start-part-1) and started off my post with...
> This is a special tribute to my parents, permanently secured on a blockchain for future generations to see. 

## So, Why the Steem Blockchain?
#### - Posting on a Site that I Don't Own...
If I were to post this tribute on another social media or blogging site, there's no way to guarantee that it'll be there in the future because I'm not the owner of the site. 
#### - Posting on a Site that I Own...
And, even if I were to post it on a website I owned, that too would eventually disappear since I can't exactly pay my hosting fee or renew my domain name from heaven. 
#### - Posting on a the Steem Blockchain...
Because the blockchain is a decentralized and permanent platform, short of an apocalypse which throws us back to the stone age, we have a much stronger chance of our content surviving to perpetuity.

## A Future Book for my Family
Since my initial post, my 16-year-old niece told me she learned that her grandmother was courageous enough to move to a new country on her own. She thought that was so cool. In addition, my mom has been sharing more stories, some previously unheard of, about my dad and her parents. She's excited about what I may write next since she knows it will be shared with her grandchildren and their children. Once I finish my own personal series for my family, I plan to compile them into a book to hand out to my mom, her children and her grandkids.

Our fellow Steemian, @beanz, informed me that whatever we publish on the blockchain won't ever be picked up by a publisher because it's in the public domain... something really good to know! So, those of us that don't plan on selling books or want to self-publish, this may be a great way to get started.
