# Chicharras in the countryside Greetings Hivers. It is a real pleasure for me to approach all the members of the community to share this Post dedicated to the **Chicharras, Cicadas or Cicadas**, small insect belonging to the family of **Cicadidae of the order Hemiptera**. Since I was a child, the month of **May** reminds me of the **Strident song of the cicadas**, every weekend we moved to the countryside and in this month they could be heard, every year they were there, imperceptible to the eyes but with such a roar that they could not be ignored. This year, I heard the **Chicharras** in mid-April at my mother-in-law's house, only at dusk and somewhat distant. When I heard them I said to **Amanda**: Listen! Those are **Crickets**, small insects that make a very loud noise and she answered me with the biggest and roundest eyes: **they sound dangerous** hehehehe. I explained to her that they were harmless and there was nothing to be afraid of. On the other hand, by that same date, at my parents' house, these insects could be heard all the time, but the sound was low. A few days ago we went for a walk in the countryside and I felt that I was transported some 20 years ago when I heard the **strident sound of the cicadas**, all the way, all day we heard the loud, very loud sound of these insects. That day, I was very curious about these little singers, whose **biological cycle** is very interesting, since they can spend up to 17 years of their life under the ground as small **nymphs** feeding on the nutrients provided by the roots of the trees, then they come to the surface without wings (they are very similar to a beetle) and through a process of metamorphosis change their appearance to become **adults with large wings**. In reality, it is the males who **stridulate**, they do it by emitting a vibration with membranes called timbales and also with their abdomen that fills and empties with air, this generates that strident sound and a vibration that attracts the female to carry out the mating. Subsequently, the female lays the **eggs** in the bark of the trees, after 6 to 7 weeks they hatch and the small nymphs fall to the ground to bury themselves, feed, grow little by little and when the biological clock tells them to emerge and complete their biological cycle. That day when we went for a walk I saw a cicada, I guess it was just rising to the surface because it did not have wings yet, I took pictures of it with great respect, care and left it alone, without disturbing it. Nature is wonderful. Isn't it? Here is a link to a page where you can access more precise information about these small and wonderful animals. https://www.museocostarica.go.cr/divulgacion/articulos-educativos/las-chicharras/ **And you, have you ever stopped to listen to the cicadas? What do you think of this little animal?** Thank you infinite for the time you have dedicated to read me. As always a pleasure to share with with all of you. Hugs in the distance.

Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
