Fifty-eight years after King Solomorn
reigned, seven kings came to the throne, ruled and left the land of Israel.
Each of them did more evil in their successions. 

By the time King Ahab came
to the throne, the nation of Israel had gone deep into serious worship and served idols in all ramifications. He had married a wicked woman Jezebel and she forcefully introduced Baal worship in the land. Her husband Ahab was indifferent to this evil in the sight of God. 

Prophet Elijah, however, came to town and encountered King Ahab on the issue as directed by God. Jesus and the Apostles did the same to the Pharisees, calling these religious bigotry "hypocrites" and white-washed sepulchres." Many other cases abound.
