Source I asked my little cousin the other day where his mother is from and he said his mother is from Cameroun a neighboring country which shares a boundary with my country Nigeria. That answer got me laughing a lot because to me it was very funny. But to the kid, it wasn’t funny and you could see that by the serious expression on his face. Actually, the little boy is not to blame, you see, his mother is originally from a State in the South Eastern part of Nigeria that is close to the border with Cameroun and she was taken by her parents to settle in Cameroun as a child and that was where she grew up, went to primary and secondary schools, worked for a while before coming back to Nigeria and in Nigeria, she choose to settle in the South Western part of the country called Lagos. This was where she was until she got married to someone from another state in the country.
Changing Times
“Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups and tribes, each with their own culture and traditions, including different languages. These tribes contribute to the vast cultural diversity of the country. There are three major tribes in Nigeria called the Hausa-Fulani, Igbo, and Yoruba….” Source. The complications if I may use that word is that we are now have so many inter-marriages between different tribes and culture and to double that we have immigration and settlement of people from one region to another. This is in no way a bad thing it is a positive development because people are beginning to understand each other very well. A lot of us are now multi-lingua and have taken up religious practices our parents did not practice. So you see a lot of people converting from traditional mode of worship their God to Christianity or Islam. It is a positive development because it is fostering peace in the land, would you want to hurt your relatives? No should be the answer, when you sister is married to another tribe and they have kids who call you uncle or aunty, it will be foolish of you to go and plan how you will wipe away that other tribe. You rather learn why they do things you don’t like about them and with a better understanding to might even join them in the act because you now understand them better.
Conclusion
Our children as fast growing into a civilization where people get married not because the other is from your tribe or culture, they are moving to the era of where love between two people is all that is required of two people to get married. We are not there yet, but with the growing trend we are getting there. It won’t be easy but we all have to give it a shot. With love comes peace and that is what we’ve got to preach always. Remove the hatred and let love take over you. I hope we will someday stop asking where one is from and start asking where you reside.
