Hey everyone! Welcome back to the 8th part in the series I'm doing about GaryVee's newest book: *Crushing It!* Today I want to talk about something that has completely changed the way I view content creation and I know it has done the same for many other creators out there as well: Document. Don't Create. Gary has talked about this idea many times over the past several years, and it's impact has become more and more profound on me the more I hear it. Reading it in his newest book really applied to what I'm doing here on Steemit and I hope to leverage the documentation process even more and provide more and better content to all of you!
"In 2009, I devoted only three lines to the idea that 'you can even make the learning process part of your content.' It was an aside, a possible solution if you were young or still building cred. Since then I've come to realize that, actually, the learning process should be your content."
As someone who's been following Gary for years, I have noticed his shifting focus towards documenting the process (i.e. Dailyvee). I really believe that this is a major shift in society and will continue to have a profound impact over the next several years. If you have ever tried to create content, then you'll know that it can often be a struggle - a battle with yourself to create something entirely from scratch. Documenting is a process that is much more manageable - you simply go about your day as you would normally, except you take just a little time every now and then to hit the record button, pick up a pen, or type a few sentences about what you're doing. If you're looking for an application of this methodology, check out my real estate investing posts here on Steemit... All I'm really doing is documenting the process of real estate development - something that I do in my normal life regardless of whether or not I share it with anyone. I just get the added benefits of sharing it with my favorite people in the world! ๐
"It's not a problem if you've got more passion than expertise." "You are unique, and you provide nuance, perspective, and details that no one else can. That means you don't just have the ability to generate unique pieces of creative - you *are* the unique pieces of creative." "Use every platform available to document your actual life and speak your truth. Let people learn who you are, then let them watch you develop into who you want to become."
You may not always know what you're doing, but the process of documenting will allow you, and others to learn from your mistakes and its a win-win for everyone involved! Don't be afraid to document the process of you just beginning to learn something for the first time - even though you aren't an expert, you still provide a unique nuance or perspective that nobody else can provide. I actually tie this back to teaching. When there is an expert in a field that is trying to teach a newcomer how to do x, y and z, the expert can often "forget" how to teach the methodologies in terms that the newcomer can understand. This gap creates a poor environment for learning and it's pretty evident when it happens. By documenting your process as you learn a given field, you can actually teach your audience while simultaneously teaching yourself - you can "speak their language."
"Documenting has liberated me from the pressure of having to create all the time." "Just because you suck now doesn't mean you're always going to suck." "they could adapt for themselves. They practiced their craft as intensely and methodically as a surgical resident practices her stitches or a professional basketball player practices his layups."
Documenting instead of creating will save you enormous amounts of time while still allowing you to put out amazing and valuable pieces of content. Worrying about how good you are at videography, photoshop, writing, etc. is not productive. You should just do it and know that just because what you make right now doesn't look quite like what you want it to, you can and will improve over time if you constantly adapt and work your ass off to get better! Constant practice and intense devotion to your craft will always lead to your success. Whether or not you make any financial gain. You will gain practical knowledge and learn by doing! Don't get stuck in the "analysis paralysis" mindset. You're actually getting in your own way by sitting around and trying to be a perfectionist. Just get out there and do it.
Thanks for reading and I hope this helps you with whatever you're trying to share in life! After reading this chapter and writing about it, I feel even more inspired to get my documentation skills up to par and if you feel the same, then get out there and document your life and continually adapt and improve your abilities, they will stick by you for a lifetime!

https://steemitimages.com/700x700/https://steemitimages.com/DQmeGbFrD6Pxjm4Zm7Gcm8aiSSCW6kuEL5HM3NPNxj1Um9Y/image.png
Here's the Question of The Day, don't forget to post your answers in the comments!
What do you want to document about your life? What's your preferred medium of communication - video, audio or written?
Thanks for reading!
