## Today's curated project: Bringing Lightness to The Old House

It had been some time since I update this curation project as I had been away for some rest at my hometown while enjoying the General Election heat in my country and busy with @archisteem’s [1001 Places to Remember S01](https://steemit.com/placestoremember/@archisteem/archisteem-congratulations-to-the-1001-places-to-remember-s01-winners). Now, I am back with some housing project as usual. I will be covering housing project until the end of this month and will change to another type of building. Today’s curation is about a renovation project which I found interesting.

This residential house renovation project is led by [Sawadeesign Studio]( https://www.facebook.com/sawadeesign/) a local Vietnamese architect firm and took place in Bình Thạnh, Vietnam. The project covered an approximate 72m² of 4 stories individual house unit and was completed in 2018.

The renovation project amazed me in the sense that the change brings a more refreshing ambiance to the house, especially bringing in the daylight into the house. No doubt, natural daylight is something important to create a holistic living space. Due to the uniquely narrow layout of the house, the architect will need to spend more time in detailing up how to allow the light to penetrate in every floor while maintaining the required space efficiency.

According to the project description, the house layout is a 4x18 m² size which was constructed in 15 years ago with the influence of French architecture (balconies and narrow elevation). The internal stair (vertical transportation system) divide the house into front and rear with different functions. In order to maintain the quality of space for each floor, it is important to ensure there is natural ventilation (stack effect and cross ventilation).

I find this similar with the Dutch townhouses with a narrow and long layout. While it seems to be narrow, the architect successfully made it felt cozy and spacious! The new young couple with 2 pet dogs are the owners and residents of this property. The renovation took consideration to minimize the cost by giving back more space for the residents. The architect achieved this by replacing concrete walls around the stair with transparent metal space frame with a bamboo pattern. This will make both front and back connected and become one. There is a vertical void (air well) which is used to bring in lighting from the above too, which at the same time allowing hot air to escape through the air well.

In terms of space planning, it is interestingly distinctive for the functions at each floor. The ground floor is created for garage and also music performance. I would justify this space is open for friends to access anytime too. 1st floor is a living room + dining room + kitchen backed with a cozy backyard garden. I love this kind of open layout which makes the living space a lot more spacious and breathable. Personally, not a fan of low ceiling and little opening (I need windows). Going up to the 2nd floor is the master bedroom with toilet and the 3rd floor is a private gym with wardrobe! Meaning to say both 2nd and 3rd floors are exclusively for the young couple, this is a very luxurious space indeed.

Ultimately, this project fascinated me in terms of its planning and execution. The effort on creating simplistic details for the furniture and a mix of traditional finishing materials made the spaces unique and modern.
