THE DEVASTATING STATE OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
My journey to ABIA STATE POLYTECHNIC Yesterday, 10th of march, prompted my write-up.
I went with my nephew to his JAMB centre yesterday, only to be reminded about Nigeria's poor education system. There is a growing concern by the public on the quality of university education and the relevance of the universities to national development.

Not only is *poor funding;* *lack of infrastructures;* *lack of frequent curriculum review;* *inadequate staff training and welfare;* *students overpopulation;* *frequent strikes by the academic and supporting staff etc* Part of the problems attributed to these setbacks, the pictures below speak for itself.

Above is the ICT building of a polytechnic, where students go to sit for the ongoing National JAMB examination. How do you write or learn well in such environment, where the air you breathe is contaminated, and everything around you is a mess?
Not only is this the case, but also quite unfortunate that necessary facilities for learning such as decent lecture halls, basic chemicals and equipment in laboratories, sufficient electricity as well are lacking. It is so obvious that public universities in Nigeria have so much to improve in order to correspond to the global standard in conducting applicable researches, being responsive to the needs of our socio-economic development and imparting knowledge.
Education is meant to provide students with the ability to think critically and independently. Another aim of education is promoting change in the values and attributes of students. However, i sadly mention that nowadays many of our university graduates are lack the discipline required for positive contribution to national development and are academically incompetent.
Yes it is true that the students, parents and the academic staff share in the blame (as the photos above shows), convincingly the bulk of the blame goes to our leaders.
In Nigeria, you either find your way to develop yourself, or keep blaming someone else for your failures.
*ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE*
