Ju Wenjun Tightens Grip on World with another win Game 6
The 2025 FIDE Women's World Championship is tilting decisively in defending champion Ju Wenjun’s favor after she defeated challenger Tan Zhongyi in Game 6, taking a formidable 4-2 lead as the match shifts to Chongqing.

Ju, playing Black, seized control early when Tan’s experimental double-fianchetto setup backfired. A misplaced knight left Tan scrambling, while Ju masterfully advanced her pawns to dominate the board. Though she missed a chance to crush White immediately, Ju’s decision to transition into a technical endgame proved flawless—she outmaneuvered Tan in a knight endgame to secure her third win in four games.

History seems to be repeating itself: In their 2018 title clash, Ju also led by two points at halftime. But Tan has shown resilience before, rallying in Chongqing last time, and insists she’s ready to battle despite the odds. "I’m a seasoned player—I know how to handle pressure," she said.

With six games left (up from four in 2018), Tan has more time to stage a comeback—but Ju is only gaining momentum. "I wasn’t happy with my start, but I’m improving with each game," the champion revealed.

After two rest days, Game 7 kicks off Sunday, April 13. Can Tan turn the tide, or will Ju deliver a knockout blow with the white pieces? The chess world awaits the next chapter in this gripping duel.
