Death by Dark Matter – Let us detect dark matter using dead humans

We don't know much about dark matter and better not to even mention dark energy. But we do know that the majority of the universe should be made from it. But actually detecting dark matter has proven to be quite the hard task. And as the more standard ways to detect this mysterious matter start to run out physicists are coming up with more extravagant ideas.

This is exactly the case with the newest idea for how to detect dark matter that has come from the heads of American physicists Jagjit Singh Sidhu and Glenn Starkman who are both from the Case Western Reserve University and Robert Scherrer from the Vanderbilt University. These gentlemen decided to use human bodies as dark matter detectors. To be more specific – a virtual detector and the bodies of all dead people in statistics coming from some countries around the world. If this idea sound, well, stupid to you you probably aren't the only one. But they are completely serious and the study named Death by Dark Matter seems actually quite reasonable.

Scientists have already tried many interesting detectors to catch dark matter. Some work on the ground, some underground and some are even in orbit. Some of the detectors have even discovered amazing things. But never was it dark matter. The one benefit this has is that the space where we can search for dark matter is getting smaller and smaller.

There are already many hypotheses for what could dark matter be. The one Sindu and his colleagues decided to focus on is macro dark matter. This should be clumps of dark matter that would be relatively macroscopic in size in comparison with classical matter. And if they exist they should be flying through space at hypersonic speeds and roughly the size of one micron.

This is where the virtual detector comes on to the scene. If the macro dark matter flies through space, occasionally they should hit a human. And this would be somewhat similar to a gun-wound. The difference would be that getting hit by macro dark matter would heat-up the tissue around to about ten-million degrees Kelvin. This would create a cloud of plasma inside the human body.

The detector works on a simple principle. There is a lot of humans on Earth. Someone would notice a death like that. Sidhu and his colleagues analyzed the data and found that nobody in the past ten years has died in this way – at least in Europe, the United States and in Canada. Macro dark matter is thus obviously not killing people.

This may sound like a boring conclusion but it did provide scientists with valuable data. Now they can be sure that there is no macro dark matter on Earth up to the size of a few microns and up to the weight of about 50 kilograms. When it comes to smaller and lighter macro dark matter, well, nobody has really studied what would the effects of those be on the human body. But that might just be their next research.
