Pulsars are quite extreme even under normal circumstances. The rotate wildly as super-hot shells of supernovae explosions. But that wasn’t enough for the pulsar PSR J0002+6216. This pulsar is rushing through the emptiness of the universe at an extremely high speed of over four million kilometers per hour. At this speed, it would take only six minutes to get from the Earth to the Moon.

The reason why J0002 is speeding through the universe is actually quite easy to understand. It’s a supernova. Frank Schinzel and his colleagues from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in New Mexico found that J0002 has a tail that is aiming straight at where a supernova recently exploded making the culprit quite obvious.

The pulsar is currently about fifty-three light years away from the center of the remains of the CTB 1 supernova. Its tail – created by its ride through cosmic gas and dust creates monumental shortwaves that shape the tail made from magnetic fields and energy. The tail itself measures roughly thirteen light years.
