***New physicist’s creation seemingly disproves the second law of thermodynamics. But usually, the temperature will not go below the temperature of the table. This is because of the second law of thermodynamics that states warmth can flow only from warmer objects to colder objects. But it wouldn’t be physicists if they wouldn’t like to break their laws. A team from the Universität Zürich developed a surprisingly simple device that is almost like a thermodynamic miracle. It can make warmth temporarily flow from colder to warmer objects without the need to be provided with energy making the colder object even colder. Such a process seemingly break the laws of physics. It’s as if Andreas Schiling and his colleagues completely ignored the second law of thermodynamics. They managed to cool a nine-gram piece of copper from a temperature of over one-hundred degrees Celsius significantly under room temperature. Without using an outside source of energy. Theoretically, their device could freeze boiling water into ice without any need for energy. Schiling and his team used a device that utilizes the Peltier effect. This works by changing electric current into temperature changes. The researchers created an oscillating circuit in which the flow of warmth changes direction. Until now this circuit was used in conjunction with an energy source but now they managed to do it passively. What should be emphasized is that obviously, their experiment doesn’t break the second law of thermodynamics. When they observed the total entropy in their system it was rising over time just as the second law of thermodynamics requires. Schiling’s team managed only about a two degrees change compared to the temperature of the surroundings. This was mainly because of the technological limitation of the used Peltier. Schiling is convinced that if an ideal Peltier was used they could achieve up to minus forty-seven degrees Celsius. The technology of cooling without an energy source works. Though it is still pretty far from practical use. One of the main reasons for that is the fact that current Peltiers aren’t very effective. But if the technology gets better thanks to the works of the scientists it could be used in incredible applications. **Sources:** * https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/4/eaat9953 * https://www.media.uzh.ch/en/Press-Releases/2019/Thermodynamic-Magic.html --- * If you like the content I’m producing about science maybe you will like the content I produce about gaming as well!
